Man Fatally Shot by Police in Western Australia While Advancing on Officers with Handgun

A man who was fatally shot by police in Western Australia after advancing on officers while armed with a handgun has been identified. The incident took place in Kalgoorlie, located 600 kilometers east of Perth, on Friday shortly after midday.

The man, identified as Dave, 58, was repeatedly warned by police before they opened fire. According to the Western Australia Police, the officers discharged their firearms after giving the man several warnings and when he continued to advance towards them.

During the encounter, one officer fired their gun twice, while another officer discharged their weapon once. Dave was struck once in the chest and the officers immediately began performing first aid until paramedics arrived at the scene. Despite their efforts, Dave succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at around 1.30 p.m. on Friday at Kalgoorlie hospital.

A critical incident was declared at the scene, and the Major Crime Division of the Western Australia Police is conducting an investigation into the man’s death. Detectives are currently reviewing the footage captured on the body cameras worn by the officers during the incident.

The police spokesperson stated that based on a preliminary assessment of the footage, it appears that the officers involved acted in accordance with policy and their training. The health and welfare of the officers remain a priority, and they have been provided with mandatory critical incident leave. Health and welfare personnel have traveled to Kalgoorlie to offer support to the officers.
