Nashville Man Fatally Shot After Altercation at Oil Change Shop
A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday evening at a Valvoline Instant Oil Change shop in Nashville, resulting in the fatal shooting of a man. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) confirmed that no charges are being pressed at present, as the shooting was believed to be an act of self-defense after the man opened fire and wounded an employee of the business.
The deceased, a 33-year-old from Antioch, has not been positively identified due to discrepancies in his identification documents. Investigations are ongoing to confirm his identity. According to the initial findings, the man drove to the Valvoline shop in a Chrysler 300, seeking assistance with his tire by requesting air. However, he grew increasingly agitated when immediate service was not provided, leading him to take matters into his own hands.
The situation escalated when the man, frustrated by the lack of immediate attention, retrieved the air compressor hose and began filling his own tire. At this point, Valvoline employee Terence Smith, 22, intervened, explaining that the customer could not perform the task himself and taking back the air compressor hose. An argument ensued, with the business manager, Brooklyn Key, 32, eventually instructing the man to leave.
In a regrettable turn of events, the altercation continued to escalate, and physical violence erupted between Smith and the customer. In an attempt to intervene, Key made a decision that would have unforeseen consequences. He retrieved a pistol from his vehicle, walked back to the scene, and witnessed the fight still in progress. Smith eventually pushed the man into the driver’s seat of his own car before walking away. It was then that the man grabbed a pistol from the rear passenger floorboard, stood up behind the open driver’s door, and fired multiple shots at Smith.
In a swift response to protect his employee, Key instinctively fired a shot at the man, ultimately striking him in the head. Tragically, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Smith, in the midst of the gunfire, sustained wounds to his arm and hip. Emergency services promptly arrived, and Smith was transported to a local hospital, where he is now in stable condition.
Following the shooting, an unidentified individual entered the shop, seized the deceased’s weapon, and swiftly fled the scene before their identity could be established. Key, the Valvoline manager, was later interviewed at police headquarters. During the interview, Key justified his actions, stating that he shot the man in self-defense. After providing his account of the incident, Key was released by law enforcement pending further investigation.
