Deadly shooting in Denver’s Harvey Park neighborhood on New Year’s Day started as an altercation, police say

A shooting incident in Denver’s Harvey Park neighborhood on New Year’s Day resulted in the death of one man and left another critically injured, according to police. The altercation, which began inside a home during a New Year’s Eve party, escalated into violence in the front yard of the property.

The shooting occurred around 1:31 a.m. on S. Zenobia Street, close to the intersection with W. Harvard Ave. The police arrived to find one victim shot multiple times, including a fatal gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital shortly before 2 a.m. The second victim, also a man, suffered gunshot wounds to the face, neck, and abdomen. Emergency responders rushed him into surgery, and he is currently listed in critical condition at Denver Health.

According to witnesses, the altercation began when a man named Anthony, who attended the New Year’s Eve party, got into an argument with someone at the house. The host then asked Anthony to leave. The disagreement spilled out into the front yard, where shots were fired, resulting in the two victims being struck.

One witness reported seeing Anthony with a gun as he was leaving the property. When questioned about it, Anthony allegedly claimed that he was trying to protect his family. However, as he encountered the person he had the altercation with once again, he allegedly pointed the gun and started shooting at the crowd in the front yard.

Terrified, the witness ran for cover while Anthony continued firing. The witness mentioned that one of the victims may have pulled out a gun and attempted to return fire.

Anthony fled the scene after the shooting but was apprehended by authorities several hours later. He is currently in custody, facing a potential charge of first-degree murder.

The Harvey Park neighborhood shooting has shocked the local community, with residents expressing concern over the escalation of violence and the loss of life. The investigation into this tragic incident continues, as authorities work to gather further evidence and interview additional witnesses.

As the details unfold, Denver residents are reminded of the importance of conflict resolution and the responsibility to handle disputes peacefully. The city’s authorities are urging anyone with further information about the shooting to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.

This incident serves as a somber start to the new year, highlighting the need for promoting a safer community and finding effective ways to prevent such acts of violence in the future.

The Denver Police Department offers its condolences to the family of the deceased victim and expresses its commitment to ensuring justice is served for all those affected by this senseless act of violence.
