Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly considering rivaling Arsenal in the race to sign West Ham’s Declan Rice. Despite Arsenal’s heavy interest in the midfielder and two rejected bids, City have also shown an interest and have even contacted West Ham officials and Rice’s representatives in recent weeks, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Arsenal’s initial bid of just over $100 million and a second offer of $95 million, plus $19 million in add-ons, were both swiftly rejected by West Ham. The club is reportedly holding out for around $127 million, with payments made in fewer installments.
City, who recently lost Ilkay Gundogan to Barcelona on a free contract, have tried to soften the blow by agreeing to a deal to sign Mateo Kovacic from rivals Chelsea for up to $38 million. But, with the interest in Rice, it is clear that the club wants another central midfielder to add to their squad.
City could use midfielder Kalvin Phillips as a bargaining chip, offering him to West Ham in a player-plus-cash deal, as he has struggled for playing time since his arrival at the club.
Arsenal, however, is still said to be confident of securing Rice and is expected to submit a third and improved offer for the midfielder soon. Losing out on their top target would be a major disappointment for the Gunners, who finished second behind City in the Premier League standings last season.
As the competition between the two clubs heats up, it remains to be seen which club will ultimately secure Rice’s signature.
