An Essex County man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting his friend following a night of partying. According to the police, the suspect had been drinking alcohol and using cocaine in the hours leading up to the incident. The victim, identified as Erica Voloshin, was found bleeding from a gunshot wound to the neck at a residence in Belleville.

The shooting took place on Meacham Street on Sunday morning, and the authorities discovered Scott Hurring, 43, near the front door. A statement recorded on an officer’s body camera allegedly captures Hurring saying, They were trying to take the house over. I shot her. The police immediately arrested Hurring, confiscating a handgun from him and recovering two spent shell casings inside the home.

According to the affidavit, Hurring fired two shots at Voloshin, hitting her once in the neck area. Emergency medical workers were called to the scene, but unfortunately, Voloshin was pronounced dead at the residence shortly after the incident. A second woman who was present in the house at the time of the shooting called 911 to report the incident.

The police stated in the affidavit that all three individuals had been partying together the night prior. The friend who called 911 informed the authorities that Hurring had been consuming alcohol and using cocaine. When the shooting occurred, she and Voloshin were awake in the living room while Hurring had gone to sleep in his bedroom. The affidavit reveals that Hurring seemed to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of his arrest.

Hurring, presently detained in the Essex County Jail, is awaiting a court hearing. As of now, no attorney is listed for him. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation into the incident and urges anyone with information to contact them.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with substance use and its impact on personal relationships. The investigation into this case will likely shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the events leading up to it.

Authorities continue to gather evidence in their pursuit of justice for Erica Voloshin, ensuring that all aspects of the incident are thoroughly examined.
