Police have charged a man following a crash on the A2. The multiple-vehicle collision on Friday (February 16) injured three people – with one being airlifted to a London hospital.

The incident on the Watling Street coastbound carriageway, between the A296 and Ebbsfleet junctions happened at around 10.40pm. It involved three cars – a black Ford Fiesta, a blue Audi S3, and a blue MG HS.

The driver of the blue Audi S3 along with his passenger had left the scene before the arrival of patrols and Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) started an investigation.

Police said a passenger in the Fiesta remains in hospital in a serious condition. The driver and a second passenger were also treated for their injuries and were later discharged.

Matthew Sparkes was charged on Wednesday (February 21) with causing serious injury by driving dangerously; failing to stop following a collision where others were injured; failing to give a name and address or make a report at a police station following a collision where others were injured, and driving without insurance. The 35-year-old was remanded in custody to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court.

A 25-year-old woman from Walworth, Greater London who was also arrested in connection with the incident has been bailed to return to the police station, pending further enquiries.

Officers are continuing to urge anyone who witnessed the collision or has CCTV or dashcam footage to contact them if they have not yet spoken to the police. Anyone with information that could assist the investigation should call the SCIU appeals line on 01622 798538, quoting reference JW/LB/016/24.
