Search Underway for Man’s Body after Shark Attack in South Australia
Authorities in South Australia are conducting a search for the body of a man who was attacked by a shark while surfing off the coast of Streaky Bay. The 55-year-old man was surfing on Tuesday morning when he was dragged underwater by the shark. Emergency services initially reported that the man was seriously injured, but later confirmed that they were searching for his body as well as the shark.
Witnesses to the attack described the horrifying scene. Jeff Schmucker, a fellow surfer who witnessed the incident from his jetski, stated that the man was attacked by a 4.2-meter great white shark from the side. He arrived at the scene within a minute but found no sign of the victim. Ian Brophy, another witness, described the attack as gruesome, recounting the moment when the shark bit and dragged the man underwater before resurfacing with his surfboard.
Following the attack, emergency services launched an extensive air and sea search to locate the man’s body and identify the shark responsible. This incident marks the third major shark attack in South Australia this year. In October, a grandmother was seriously injured in an attack by a juvenile great white shark, while in May, a teacher was killed in another attack near Elliston.
Authorities are urging caution for beachgoers in the area and working to ensure the safety of the public. Shark attacks highlight the potential risks associated with ocean activities, and communities are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow any safety guidelines provided by local authorities.
