Japanese authorities have arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly creating a ransomware virus using generative artificial intelligence (AI). This case, believed to be the first of its kind in Japan, raises concerns about the potential misuse of AI technology.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Ryuki Hayashi, an unemployed resident of Kawasaki, was taken into custody on May 27. He faces charges related to the unauthorized creation of electric or magnetic records containing malicious commands.

Investigators revealed that Hayashi used his home computer and smartphone in March 2023 to amalgamate information on malware creation obtained through several generative AI platforms.

The virus Hayashi developed was designed to encrypt data on targeted systems and subsequently demand cryptocurrency as ransom.

Fortunately, no actual damage has been reported thus far. During police interrogation, Hayashi confessed, stating, I wanted to make money through ransomware. I thought I could do anything if I asked AI.

While platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT have enhanced their safeguards against generating criminal content, certain interactive AI systems online still dispense unrestricted information that can be misused. According to sources, Hayashi discreetly queried these AI systems, masking his intentions to obtain technical details necessary for crafting the ransomware.

The MPD is currently investigating the specific generative AI tools Hayashi employed, along with their functionalities, to better understand how he circumvented existing security measures.

This is not Hayashi’s first brush with the law. In March, he was arrested on suspicion of fraud for unlawfully acquiring a smartphone SIM card. During a search of his residence, police discovered a homemade virus on his computer, which led to the current charges.

The MPD continues to investigate, aiming to uncover the full extent of Hayashi’s activities and to develop strategies to mitigate the misuse of AI technologies.
