West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is sending a six-member team to the Balasore district in Odisha following an accident that occurred on Friday evening. Several coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel express train derailed near the Bahanaga railway station, with reports suggesting that multiple passengers have been killed or injured. Banerjee had personally instructed Chief Secretary H.K. Dwivedi to send the team to the accident site and help West Bengal residents who were travelling on the train. Since the train departed from Shalimar station in West Bengal, it is likely that many passengers may have been domiciles of West Bengal. The South Eastern Railways have already cancelled several trains that were scheduled to pass through the area where the accident took place. The state government and railway authorities are looking into the matter, with all efforts being made to aid and assist rescue operations. The Chief Secretary confirmed that the state government is maintaining a constant touch with the Odisha government to get more details about the accident and the casualties.
