West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appointed Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Derek O’Brien to attend the all-party meeting on the Manipur crisis convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Delhi on Saturday. Banerjee was keen to visit Manipur but forwarded O’Brien instead. The Chief Minister made the announcement before leaving for Patna to attend an opposition meeting convened by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Also accompanying her is Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
During the event, Banerjee also attacked West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose for refusing to accept the joining letter of State Election Commissioner Rajiva Sinha and sending it back to the state secretariat. She insisted the Governor has no power to remove the Commissioner other than through impeachment. The Chief Minister stressed that the Governor previously cleared Sinha’s name for the post, and cannot act as per his own wish.
