Indian Congress national president, Mallikarjun Kharge, has criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre for their handling of the recent train accident in Odisha’s Balasore. Three trains collided resulting in 275 deaths and over 1000 injuries. Kharge has accused the Centre of not implementing safety measures and reducing allocation for track renewals. He claims that many railway posts remain vacant, leading to a scarcity of manpower, and that the Railway Ministry ignored warnings to repair the signalling system. The Comptroller and Auditor General found a huge decline in the amount of track renewals and zero testing of rails and welds. Kharge called for fixing responsibility from top to bottom and demanded accountability in order to prevent future accidents from happening. The restoration work following the accident is in full swing.
