Members of the Mali community, a Hindu caste in India, held a maha panchayat in Jaipur to demand increased political representation, a higher education quota, and 12% reservation in jobs for community members. The event was attended by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. The BJP leaders were called to the event just a month after members of the community blocked the Jaipur-Agra National Highway to apply pressure for their demands. The 11-day-long protest ended on May 2 after the state government promised to conduct a survey in view of the community’s quota demand. Maurya promised that he would take up their 11-point demands to the central Government and spoke about how giving tickets to candidates from the Mali community will increase based on their population. The speech was cut short by a group of participants voicing their support for Ashok Gehlot, a member of the Congress party who comes from the Mali community. Elections in Rajasthan are due at the end of this year, and quota demands have been raised by other communities such as Jats, Brahmins, Rajputs, and SCs and STs.
