Two Malden men have been sentenced to prison for trafficking fentanyl and methamphetamine disguised as popular prescription drugs. Matthew Ramos, 26, received a sentence of 90 months in prison and four years of supervised release, while Igor Desouza, 27, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and five years of supervised release.
Ramos pleaded guilty to one count of distributing and possessing with intent to distribute methamphetamine, fentanyl, and other controlled substances in October 2023. Desouza, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine, 40 grams or more of fentanyl, and other controlled substances in August 2023.
The arrests and subsequent sentences came after a search of Ramos and Desouza’s shared residence on May 25, 2021. Law enforcement discovered a significant quantity of drugs, including over two kilograms of methamphetamine pills disguised as Adderall or Xanax, and 150 grams of fentanyl pills disguised as oxycodone and Percocet. They also found MDMA, cocaine, crack cocaine, oxycodone, etilozam, suboxone strips, marijuana, LSD, and mushrooms. In total, more than 10,000 counterfeit prescription pills were seized, along with various other illegal drugs.
Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Brian D. Boyle, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, New England Division, announced the sentencing. Assistance was provided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, Boston Field Division, the Malden Police Department, and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lindsey E. Weinstein of the Narcotics & Money Laundering Unit.
The drug trafficking operation conducted by Ramos and Desouza highlights the widespread and dangerous issue of illicit drugs being passed off as legitimate prescription medications. The use of disguised drugs makes it particularly challenging for law enforcement and individuals to identify and combat the illegal trade. This case serves as a reminder to remain vigilant and exercise caution when consuming medications obtained outside of legitimate channels.
By sentencing these individuals to significant prison terms, the court sends a strong message that drug trafficking will not be tolerated. The cooperation between various law enforcement agencies served as a crucial factor in dismantling this operation and preventing the distribution of harmful substances in Malden and beyond.
The Malden community and the wider public should take note of this case, as it reflects the ongoing efforts to combat the opioid crisis and the illegal drug trade. These sentences aim to protect public safety and send a signal that those engaging in such activities will be held accountable.
It is important for individuals to be aware of the risks associated with illicit drugs, including the potential for the presence of dangerous substances such as fentanyl. Seeking medical advice and obtaining medications only from authorized sources are essential steps in safeguarding personal health and well-being.
The sentencing of Matthew Ramos and Igor Desouza serves as a warning to others involved in similar criminal activities. The fight against drug trafficking continues, and law enforcement agencies are dedicated to pursuing individuals who jeopardize community safety through the distribution of illicit substances.
