Malaysia’s Fishermen to Boost Economy with One Association, One Product Initiative

The Fisheries Development Authority Malaysia (LKIM) has unveiled a new initiative aimed at bolstering the economy and eliminating poverty among fishermen in the country. The program, known as one fishermen’s association, one product, has the potential to enhance the livelihoods and overall quality of life for fishermen, many of whom fall within the lower-income bracket.

With 113 fishermen associations across Malaysia, LKIM Chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil envisions each association developing its own distinctive downstream products and activities. By focusing on fish-based offerings, the aim is to generate additional income for these associations. This approach not only holds the promise of economic prosperity for fishermen but also ensures a steady supply of fish products in the market.

During the launch of the Rahmah Mesra Madani event, which benefited Orang Asli fishermen from Pulau Indah, 29 individuals received food packs and fishing equipment valued at RM31,030 as part of the Modern Equipment Assistance program (Touch Point).

LKIM’s one association, one product initiative reflects a concerted effort to empower fishermen and strengthen local economies. By stimulating the creation of unique products and activities within each association, this initiative has the potential to alleviate poverty and enhance the standards of living for fishermen and their families.

The introduction of downstream products derived from fish not only diversifies the income streams of fishermen but also taps into the growing market demand for fish-based products. These offerings can range from processed seafood items to value-added products such as fish-based snacks or cosmetics.

Through this initiative, LKIM aims to foster entrepreneurship and innovation among fishermen, transforming them from mere fishermen to producers and creators. By developing their own products, fishermen will gain access to new income opportunities, allowing them to break free from the cycle of poverty.

Additionally, the one association, one product initiative aligns with the government’s vision of boosting economic growth and reducing income disparity in Malaysia. It represents a proactive step towards empowering marginalized communities and ensuring their active participation in the country’s economic development.

As each association develops its unique product, the diversity within the fishing industry will increase, fostering a vibrant marketplace. This initiative not only benefits the fishermen themselves but also contributes to the overall economic growth and stability of the nation.

With the one association, one product initiative, LKIM strives to create a more sustainable fishing industry that not only supports the livelihoods of fishermen but also enhances Malaysia’s economic landscape. By diversifying income streams and fostering entrepreneurship, this program holds the promise of a brighter future for fishermen and their communities.
