Malaria Epidemic Remains the Leading Cause of Death in Africa, Says Ethiopian Health Minister

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 19 – Ethiopian Health Minister, Lia Tadesse, has issued a stark warning that malaria continues to be the primary cause of death in Africa, with a particularly devastating impact on children. Speaking at the 9th Pan-African Mosquito Control Association Annual Conference and Exhibition in Addis Ababa, Tadesse emphasized the urgent need to address this ongoing public health crisis.

According to Tadesse, the prevalence of malaria and related diseases in Africa presents significant challenges that must be tackled head-on. She stressed the importance of effectively utilizing available resources and technologies to maximize efforts in disease control.

Ethiopia has made commendable progress in the prevention and control of malaria, thanks to coordinated efforts between the government and various stakeholders over the past two decades. The country implemented a national malaria strategic plan in 2021 with the aim of eliminating malaria entirely.

Unfortunately, despite significant advancements in malaria control across Africa, various factors such as conflicts, displacement, floods, and droughts have contributed to a resurgence of the disease. Tadesse urged countries to address these issues proactively to counteract the alarming rise in malaria cases.

The ongoing conference, hosting over 1,000 participants from Africa and beyond, aims to facilitate discussions on combatting malaria across the continent. By bringing together experts and stakeholders, the event can foster collaboration and the sharing of innovative solutions to combat this persistent health threat.

Official statistics indicate that in Ethiopia, the number of malaria cases and fatalities has decreased by a remarkable 90 percent over the past decade. However, the recent increase in malaria transmission can be attributed to environmental factors such as climate change and security challenges.

Efforts to combat malaria should remain a top priority for governments and international organizations. While progress has been made, it is essential to sustain momentum and allocate sufficient resources to tackle this preventable and treatable disease. Additionally, concerted efforts should focus on addressing the underlying factors that contribute to its resurgence.

As the conference continues over the course of five days, delegates will explore innovative strategies, cutting-edge technologies, and collaborative approaches to eliminate malaria from Africa for good. Together, they can work towards a future where malaria no longer claims countless lives and hinders progress.

In conclusion, the fight against malaria in Africa is far from over. The Ethiopian Health Minister’s warning serves as a reminder of the urgent need for ongoing efforts to combat this deadly disease. By harnessing the power of collaboration, innovation, and sustainable resource allocation, there is hope for a malaria-free Africa and a brighter future for its children.
