Title: Major League Cricket Launches in the U.S., Marking a Significant Milestone for the Sport
In an exciting development for cricket enthusiasts, Major League Cricket (MLC) has kicked off in the United States with the inaugural match between Texas Super Kings and Los Angeles Knight Riders. The thrilling encounter took place on July 14 at a state-of-the-art cricket-specific stadium in Dallas, marking a significant milestone for the sport.
The MLC features six teams, comprising a blend of major cricket players from around the world and local American talents. Over the course of the season, these teams will compete in 18 games, ultimately leading up to the highly anticipated championship final on July 30.
The opening match garnered tremendous support, with all tickets for the cricket-specific stadium’s 7,200 seats and grass wicket meeting the highest international standards being sold out. Cricket enthusiasts from various countries, including India, Australia, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and New Zealand, are eagerly anticipating the start of Major League Cricket in the United States.
Among the star players participating in the league are Afghanistan’s T20 captain Rashid Khan, South African internationals Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, and David Miller, West Indians Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, and Dwayne Bravo, Australians Marcus Stoinis and Aaron Finch, England’s Jason Roy and Liam Plunkett, Sri Lankan Dasun Shanaka, and New Zealand’s Trent Boult.
The teams participating in the inaugural season are Los Angeles Knight Riders, MI New York, San Francisco Unicorns, Seattle Orcas, Texas Super Kings, and Washington Freedom. Interestingly, most of these teams are owned by Indian Americans, venture capitalists primarily working in the IT and start-up sector.
The league’s format will feature a round-robin competition, with the top four teams proceeding to a multi-game playoff and final round to determine the champion. The league aims to introduce cricket to a wider audience while providing a platform for talented players to showcase their skills.
The Seattle Orcas, representing Washington State, are owned by an investor group that includes Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella and other prominent individuals. Los Angeles Knight Riders are based in Los Angeles and owned by Knight Riders Groups. San Francisco Unicorns, on the other hand, are owned by Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan, co-founders of Cambrian Ventures. Texas Super Kings enjoy co-ownership from the Chennai Super Kings, Ross Perot Jr., and Anurag Jain, while the Washington Freedom team is owned by Indian American entrepreneur Sanjay Govil.
For cricket fans in America, this is a dream come true, expressed M R Rangaswami, a cricket enthusiast from San Francisco, who will be flying to Dallas to witness the opening match. He emphasized that the excitement extends beyond the Indian diaspora, attracting fans from various cricket-loving nations.
The launch of Major League Cricket in the United States is a strategic move, considering the country’s vast media market. While Indian players are currently excluded due to existing rules from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), there is hope that in the future, sending Indian players to participate in the league will benefit all parties involved.
As the league unfolds, Sameer Mehta, co-founder of Major League Cricket, is confident that fans will have an unforgettable experience. The opening match at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas was just the beginning of what promises to be an enthralling journey for cricket enthusiasts in America.
Faf du Plessis, captain of the Texas Super Kings, expressed his excitement about representing the Lone Star State and playing in Grand Prairie Stadium, referring to the inaugural match as a historic night for cricket in America. Meanwhile, Sunil Narine, captain of the Los Angeles Knight Riders, echoed similar sentiments and highlighted the thrill of bringing their brand of cricket to American fans.
Major League Cricket’s arrival marks an important moment in the growth of the sport in the United States. By showcasing top international talent, the league aims to captivate audiences and pave the way for more cricketing opportunities in the country.
