A statue of Mahatma Gandhi was revealed in Dhumat village in Kendrapara district, Odisha, marking the 89th anniversary of Gandhi’s visit to the village on May 30, 1934, and to commemorate his role in India’s freedom struggle. Kendrapara MLA and former minister Sashibhusan Behera revealed the statue as part of a meeting which was organized by the district freedom fighters’ Association and the district administration. The gram panchayat of Indupur built the fibre statue to remind locals of the significance of Gandhi’s 1934 padayatra and his stay in Dhumat. During his visit, villagers carried water from the nearby river in buckets for Gandhi to take a bath on a stone in Dhumat. A pedestal and half-bust statues of Gandhi and Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das were also built near the stone, which is still preserved today. In response to a call given by Gandhi to join the freedom struggle, villagers of Dhumat, Indupur, and surrounding areas took a plunge into the movement. A thatched Ashram was built in 1938 in memory of Gandhi, but it was destroyed during a super cyclone in October 1999.
