Mumbai: Resident doctors in Maharashtra’s government hospitals have announced an indefinite strike commencing from 5 pm on February 7. The strike comes as a result of prolonged delays and irregularities in stipend disbursement, as well as alleged mistreatment of doctors.

Around 7,000 resident doctors from various hospitals across the state are joining the strike, which is scheduled to begin tomorrow.

Dr. Aditi Kanade, a resident doctor at Mumbai’s Grant Medical College & Sir JJ Group Of Hospitals, outlined the three main demands of the protesters: improved hostel conditions, timely stipend release, and an increase in stipend amounts.

We have three main demands. First, the conditions of our hostels need to be improved. Second, we want our stipends to be released on time, and third, the stipend amount should be increased, Dr. Kanade stated while speaking to news agency PTI.

The strike is expected to impact medical services in government hospitals across the state, although emergency services will continue to operate during the protest.

The resident doctors are advocating for their stipend payments to be aligned with those of central government institutes and are urging authorities to clear outstanding stipends and arrears. Despite pursuing their grievances through various channels, including the Central MARD, for over a year, the issues remain unresolved.

MARD issued a statement on Tuesday emphasizing that the decision to strike was a last resort due to the failure to address their demands. The protesting resident doctors expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to patients as a result of the strike.

The strike comes at a critical time when adequate healthcare services are needed amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Patients and their families are concerned about the potential impact of the strike on their access to medical care.

Efforts to resolve the matter through dialogue between the state health ministry and the representatives of resident doctors have so far been unsuccessful. With no immediate resolution in sight, patients may face difficulties in getting the medical attention they require.

The strike is a reflection of deep-rooted issues within the healthcare system, highlighting the hardships faced by resident doctors who work tirelessly to provide essential medical care. Their demands for better living conditions and timely and fair remuneration are not only important for their well-being but also contribute to a more efficient and sustainable healthcare system.

As the strike commences, it is crucial for all stakeholders to come together to find a prompt and mutually agreeable solution. This would not only address the immediate concerns of the resident doctors but also pave the way for a healthier and more supportive work environment for medical professionals in the long run.

The impact of the strike on patients cannot be ignored, and it is essential for alternative arrangements to be made to ensure that emergency medical services continue without interruption. Authorities must prioritize patient care and do everything possible to minimize hardships while working towards a resolution with the striking resident doctors.

In conclusion, the indefinite strike by resident doctors in Maharashtra’s government hospitals highlights the urgent need for improved living conditions, timely stipend disbursement, and fair remuneration. The strike is expected to impact medical services in the state, underscoring the critical importance of finding a swift and amicable resolution to address the concerns of the resident doctors.
