Madhya Pradesh BJP Candidate Under Inquiry for Anti-Muslim Remarks

The National Commission for Minorities has initiated an inquiry into a BJP candidate from Madhya Pradesh, Alok Sharma, for making derogatory remarks against Muslims. Sharma, who is the vice-president of the BJP’s state chapter, made the controversial comments during a party meeting in Jaora, Ratlam.

During his speech, Sharma stated, I want to tell Muslim brothers… because you will not give us votes, so don’t go to cast your votes. These remarks have sparked outrage and allegations of voter intimidation, prompting the National Minorities Commission to take action.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary, Iqbal Singh Bains, has been sent a notice by the Commission, requesting an inquiry into Alok Sharma’s statement. A response has been sought within 21 days. The commission intervened following a complaint lodged by Abbas Hafeez, Vice President of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Media Department, who accused Sharma of threatening the Muslim community.

In his complaint letter, Hafeez expressed concern over Alok Sharma’s statement, viewing it as an attempt to disenfranchise the Muslim community. He called for appropriate action to be taken against Sharma and urged the National Minorities Commission to intervene.

Alok Sharma made his remarks during the BJP worker’s convention on August 11, where he explicitly discouraged Muslims from voting. However, the controversial statement was not captured on camera as Sharma specifically requested it to be switched off before continuing his speech.

The National Commission for Minorities’ inquiry seeks to address the allegations of voter intimidation and ensure that the democratic rights of all communities are protected. The outcome of the inquiry will determine if any action will be taken against Alok Sharma.

The incident has ignited a debate on the role of political leaders in safeguarding the rights and inclusivity of marginalized communities. Critics argue that such remarks perpetuate divisiveness and fuel communal tension, while others believe in the importance of free speech and expressing political opinions.

The BJP has yet to release an official statement regarding Alok Sharma’s comments. However, the incident has cast a spotlight on the need for politicians to be mindful of their language while campaigning and promoting a more harmonious and inclusive society.

The inquiry’s findings and subsequent actions will not only impact Alok Sharma’s political career but will also serve as a critical moment in the ongoing discourse surrounding religious freedom and fair elections in India.
