Madagascan President’s Chief of Staff Arrested in London Bribery Attempt

The chief of staff for Madagascan President Andry Rajoelina has been arrested in London over allegations of bribery involving precious stone miner Gemfields. Romy Andrianarisoa and a French associate were apprehended during a meeting in the British capital, where they were suspected of trying to solicit a bribe in exchange for operating licenses in Madagascar. The National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK confirmed the arrests on Monday.

Andrianarisoa, who works closely with President Rajoelina, was detained alongside French national Philippe Tabuteau. The NCA believes that the pair were seeking a bribe of around £225,000 ($286,000) in upfront charges, as well as a 5% equity stake. The arrests were the result of extensive cooperation between Gemfields and the NCA, which praised the quick response from the mining company for bringing the matter to their attention.

Gemfields, a UK-based miner, is known for its ownership of the Faberge jewelry brand as well as its ruby and emerald mines in southern Africa. The company has been exploring opportunities to expand its operations in countries such as Ethiopia and Madagascar. It was during these negotiations that the alleged bribery attempt took place.

Andrianarisoa, 46, and Tabuteau, 54, appeared in court last Saturday and have been remanded in custody until their next hearing on September 8th in London. Representatives for President Rajoelina’s office and the suspects were not immediately available for comment.

The news of the arrests has raised concerns about corruption in Madagascar, an African island nation known for its valuable natural resources. The case highlights the importance of international cooperation to combat bribery and maintain ethical business practices.

Gemfields has declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. The company’s cooperation with the NCA has been crucial in ensuring the progress of the case, according to Andy Kelly, the head of the NCA’s international corruption unit.

This incident serves as a reminder that companies operating in developing countries must adhere to ethical standards and avoid engaging in corrupt practices. It is also a testament to the effectiveness of international law enforcement agencies in combating bribery and holding individuals accountable for their actions.

As the case unfolds, it is expected that further information will come to light regarding the alleged bribery attempt and its potential impact on Gemfields’ operations in Madagascar. The outcome of the legal proceedings will also be closely watched, as it will demonstrate the commitment of the UK and Madagascar to combating corruption and upholding the rule of law.

Ultimately, this incident underscores the need for transparency and integrity in business dealings, regardless of the geographic location. Companies operating in developing nations must ensure that their operations are conducted ethically and in compliance with local laws and regulations to avoid tarnishing their reputation and potentially facing legal consequences.

The Madagascan government, along with international partners, will likely use this case as an opportunity to reassess their strategies for combating corruption and promoting responsible business practices. By doing so, they can foster an environment that attracts legitimate investments and supports sustainable development in the country.
