The move comes after two travelers reported that their checked luggage had been stolen from the carousel.
The victims, Jeff Garcia and his brother-in-law Todd Rhynes, initially believed that Southwest Airlines had made an error when their bags were missing. However, upon visiting the airport office, they were informed that the bags had been scanned off the plane and onto the carousel. This discovery raised concerns about theft rather than a simple mishap.
The situation took an unexpected turn when Garcia realized that his suitcase was on the move. Using a hidden Apple AirTag, he tracked the bag’s location on his phone and discovered that it was heading towards downtown San Jose. Determined to retrieve his belongings, Garcia embarked on a search and eventually found his suitcase at a homeless encampment near Highway 101. Unfortunately, by the time the police arrived, most of the contents were missing, leaving only a shirt and an empty box behind.
Rhynes also suffered losses, with the thieves taking one of his rare T-shirts and sentimental items given to him by his children. The inability to replace these items has added to their frustration and disappointment.
In light of this incident, San Jose Mineta International Airport has increased the presence of its security team at the baggage claim area. However, they stress that the responsibility for baggage handling and delivery lies with each individual airline. Southwest Airlines has responded by maintaining a presence in the baggage areas of all the airports they serve, as well as increasing the number of their representatives at San Jose Mineta International Airport. Additionally, they have notified local airport and law enforcement authorities of their heightened security measures.
