Los Angeles Chargers Quarterback Justin Herbert Throws 2 Interceptions in Training Camp Practice

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had a challenging day during the team’s training camp practice on Tuesday. Herbert threw two interceptions in team drills, which were a cause for concern for the coaching staff.

The first interception came in a seven-on-seven drill when Herbert targeted rookie receiver Quentin Johnston on an in-breaking route. Unfortunately, Johnston slipped and fell, leading to the interception by cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. Herbert’s second interception came during an 11-on-11 drill in a live move-the-ball period. Looking to complete a pass to receiver Keenan Allen over the middle, Herbert’s throw was picked off by safety JT Woods.

Despite these interceptions, there were some positive developments during the practice. Safety JT Woods had a solid performance in Sunday night’s preseason game and continued to impress in practice. He showed good tackling skills and displayed strong coverage, including two pass breakups. Woods is expected to have a significant role as the team’s second safety alongside Derwin James Jr. in certain game situations.

Wide receiver Mike Williams also had a standout practice, making four receptions, all from Herbert. Williams showcased his ability to make contested catches against cornerback Michael Davis and displayed explosiveness with a catch on an over route off play-action. Williams, who has been relatively quiet in camp, seems to be finding his rhythm just in time for the regular season.

However, not all receivers had a flawless performance. Rookie Quentin Johnston struggled with consistency throughout camp. In addition to slipping on the play that resulted in Herbert’s first interception, Johnston had a bad drop on the opening play of the two-minute drill. Drops were a concern for Johnston in college, and unfortunately, those concerns seem to be surfacing in training camp. Despite the setbacks, Johnston did manage to make a few catches and displayed potential with a strong contested catch over the middle during the move-the-ball period.

On the other hand, fellow rookie wide receiver Joshua Palmer continued to impress with consistent playmaking. Palmer had the highlight play of the day, catching a deep ball from Herbert for a 50-yard gain. His reliability and performance in camp have drawn attention from the coaching staff.

In terms of injuries, safety Alohi Gilman, safety Mark Webb Jr., linebacker Nick Niemann, and linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga returned to practice after recovering from their respective injuries. This was especially significant for Webb, who had been sidelined with a groin injury. Webb’s history of injuries has hindered his progress in the NFL, but his return to practice is a positive sign for his development.

The Chargers made some changes to the offensive line during the practice, with Zack Bailey moving to right tackle and Austen Pleasants shifting to right guard with the second-team offense. These adjustments are aimed at optimizing the performance of the offensive line.

In other news, cornerback J.C. Jackson participated in seven-on-seven drills but did not join the 11-on-11 drills. Defensive lineman Austin Johnson returned to team drills for the first time since being activated off the physically unable to perform list.

The Chargers also signed linebacker Tae Crowder and waived offensive lineman Andrew Trainer with an injury designation. This move reflects the team’s need for more linebacker depth ahead of their upcoming preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.

As the Chargers conclude their training camp with the final practice at Hoag Performance Center, they will be looking for Herbert to iron out the issues that led to the interceptions. The coaching staff remains optimistic about rookie receiver Quentin Johnston’s progress and expects him to contribute as the regular season begins. Meanwhile, Joshua Palmer continues to impress with consistent playmaking. The return of injured players provides a boost to the team’s depth, and adjustments to the offensive line aim to enhance overall performance. The Chargers will now focus on their preseason finale and continue preparations for the upcoming regular season.
