Long-Term Use of Acid Reflux Drugs Linked to Higher Risk of Dementia, Study Shows
A recent study published in Neurology has found that long-term use of acid reflux drugs, known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), may be linked to a higher risk of dementia. The research, conducted by the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, highlights the importance of considering the potential risks of these medications.
Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows into the esophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn and ulcers. Long-term or frequent acid reflux can lead to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and potentially increase the risk of esophageal cancer. In an effort to control acid reflux, many people turn to PPIs, which work by targeting the enzymes in the stomach lining that produce stomach acid.
However, previous studies have already linked long-term PPI use to a higher risk of stroke, bone fractures, and chronic kidney disease. Now, this new study suggests that there may be a connection between PPI use and dementia.
The study involved 5,712 participants aged 45 and older who did not have dementia at the beginning of the study. Their medication usage was determined through reviews of their medications during study visits and yearly phone calls. Of the participants, 1,490 individuals, or 26%, had taken PPIs. The participants were then divided into four groups based on their usage patterns. The study followed these individuals for an average of 5.5 years.
During the study, 10% of the participants developed dementia, with 415 cases among the 4,222 people who did not take PPIs and 58 cases among the 497 individuals who took the drugs for more than 4.4 years. After adjusting for various factors, including age, sex, and health-related conditions, the researchers discovered that those who took PPIs for more than 4.4 years had a 33% higher risk of developing dementia compared to those who had never taken the drugs.
It is important to note that this study only shows an association between long-term PPI use and dementia; it does not prove that the medications cause dementia. However, given the potential risks already associated with these drugs, it is essential for individuals who regularly take PPIs to consult with their doctors and discuss the best treatment options for their acid reflux.
While there are various ways to manage acid reflux, such as taking antacids, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding late meals and certain foods, different approaches may not work for everyone. Abruptly stopping PPIs can result in worsened symptoms, so it is crucial to seek professional medical advice before making any changes to drug regimens.
The study authors acknowledge that more research is needed to confirm these findings and understand the reasons behind the possible link between long-term PPI use and a higher risk of dementia.
