Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, was adjourned on Friday amid opposition demands for a discussion on a no-confidence motion. Opposition parties have been protesting over the Manipur situation and have been urging for a detailed discussion and a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The demands from the opposition led to the adjournment of Rajya Sabha, the upper house, for the day.
In the Lok Sabha, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury cited a historical example and mentioned that in 1978 the House started debating the no-confidence motion on the same day it was admitted. On the other hand, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi stated that the government is ready for a debate on the day and time decided by the Speaker, as the rules provide a 10-day window.
The no-confidence motion has been in focus as the opposition aims to raise crucial issues and concerns regarding the government’s handling of various political matters. The Speaker’s acceptance of the motion indicates that a debate on the subject will take place in the near future.
