Lionel Messi Sidelined by Muscular Fatigue, Miami Coach Prioritizes Rest for Star Player
Lionel Messi, the renowned Argentine footballer, has been sidelined by muscular fatigue, according to Miami coach Gerardo Tata Martino. The decision not to include Messi in the squad for the game against Atlanta United was made in order to prioritize his rest and prevent any potential injuries.
Coach Martino stated that while Messi is currently fine, it was important to be cautious with him due to the intense schedule of upcoming matches. The team has been facing a packed schedule before the international break and has another quick turnaround for their home match against Toronto FC on Wednesday.
Furthermore, Messi will be participating in more World Cup qualifiers in October, with CONMEBOL qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru. Considering the demanding nature of these games and the need for adequate recovery time, it is crucial to ensure Messi’s well-being and avoid overexertion.
Martino acknowledged that the team was aware such situations would arise, but emphasized the importance of adapting to their schedule, especially during seasons with a high number of matches. Playing 90 minutes per game with limited rest days in between can take a toll on any player’s body, hence the importance of managing Messi’s workload.
Despite facing concerns over playing on turf, Messi assured everyone that he had no problem adapting to it. He mentioned that his youth was spent playing on artificial turf, and he was confident in his ability to perform well on such surfaces. Turf has recently been under scrutiny due to NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles tendon injury, which was attributed to the playing surface.
Notably, Atlanta United was one of the two MLS teams on Inter Miami’s remaining away schedule that played on turf. The other team, Charlotte FC, is set to face Miami in the last game of the regular season, by which time Inter Miami might have already secured a playoff spot. However, if the team does make it to the playoffs, they could potentially face other Eastern Conference clubs that have turf fields, like the New England Revolution.
Overall, Martino’s decision to rest Messi showcases the team’s commitment to the star player’s long-term welfare. By prioritizing rest and avoiding overexertion, Inter Miami aims to ensure Messi’s availability and performance in crucial upcoming matches.
