Lionel Messi’s impact at Inter Miami continues to impress as he inspired his team to a thrilling comeback victory in the US Open Cup semi-final against Cincinnati. Despite being two goals down, Messi’s brilliance helped Miami secure a 5-4 win on penalties after a pulsating 3-3 draw in extra time.

Since joining Inter Miami last month, Messi has formed a formidable partnership with Spanish duo Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. The unbeaten run of Miami since their arrival seemed in danger in Ohio as Cincinnati put on an impressive display.

Cincinnati took an early lead through Luciano Acosta in the 18th minute, and Brandon Vazquez doubled their advantage with a superb strike from outside the box in the 53rd minute. With just 22 minutes remaining, Messi stepped up and delivered two perfect assists to Leonardo Campana, leveling the scoreline and forcing extra time.

In the dying moments of stoppage time, Messi’s cross from the left found Campana again, and the Ecuadorian forward headed home to equalize once more. However, Cincinnati regained the lead in the second period of extra time with Yuya Kubo’s right-foot shot into the far corner.

The thrilling encounter eventually went to a penalty shootout, with both teams tied at 4-4. Miami’s goalkeeper, Drake Callender, became the hero as he saved Nick Hagglund’s penalty for Cincinnati. The spotlight then fell on 18-year-old Miami-born Lorenzo Cremaschi, whose parents are Argentine. Cremaschi converted the decisive spot kick, securing Miami’s spot in the final.

After the match, Cremaschi expressed his joy and gratitude for the opportunity to play alongside Lionel Messi. I’m living a huge dream. Sometimes I sit down and really think about the position that I’m in, and it’s incredible. I never believed I was going to be in the spot I am in now, he shared with CBS Sports.

Inter Miami, with Messi leading the charge, is now just one victory away from their second trophy since the Argentine superstar’s arrival. They will face the winners of the semi-final clash between Houston Dynamo and Real Salt Lake.

The impact of Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami has been undeniable, with the team showcasing a renewed energy and determination. The combination of Messi, Busquets, and Alba has brought a new dynamic to the side, with their individual brilliance shining through in crucial moments. As the team marches towards potential silverware, the influence of Messi continues to grow, and his teammates are relishing the opportunity to play alongside one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen.
