LG Energy Solution, a South Korean battery maker, has announced a partnership with China’s Huayou Cobalt to establish a joint venture focused on battery recycling. This move aims to diversify the supply channels and ensure a stable sourcing of essential raw materials. Under the agreement, the two companies will construct two factories in China, one for pre-treatment of battery scraps and used batteries, and the other for metal extraction during post-processing.

The pre-treatment plant will be situated in Nanjing, in Jiangsu Province, while the post-processing plant will be built in Quzhou, in Zhejiang Province. This strategic placement aligns with LG Energy Solution’s existing manufacturing site in Nanjing and Huayou Cobalt’s headquarters in Zhejiang. Although the financial details and transaction terms have not been disclosed, the extracted metals from the recycling plants will be reprocessed into cathode materials, a critical component in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. Ultimately, the output will be delivered to LG Energy Solution’s Nanjing factory.

This collaboration with Huayou Cobalt will not only strengthen the supply of raw materials but also establish a sustainable resource circulation system. By creating a virtuous cycle of resources, LG Energy Solution aims to ensure a stable and reliable supply of essential materials. The construction of these two recycling factories is set to commence this year, with operations expected to begin in late 2024, according to LG Energy Solution.

The partnership between LG Energy Solution and Huayou Cobalt illustrates the increasing focus on battery recycling, driven by the rising demand for electric vehicles and the need for sustainable material sourcing. Recycling batteries can recover valuable metals and reduce the environmental impact associated with their production. The collaboration between a South Korean battery manufacturer and a Chinese company highlights the international cooperation required to address the challenges associated with battery recycling and sustainable sourcing.

The establishment of the joint venture aligns with LG Energy Solution’s commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible supply chain management. The company acknowledges the importance of integrating sustainability practices throughout the battery lifecycle. By recycling batteries and reusing vital materials, LG Energy Solution takes a significant step towards minimizing waste and reducing dependency on primary raw materials.

While battery recycling is not a new concept, this collaboration highlights the increasing recognition of its importance within the growing electric vehicle market. As governments and consumers prioritize sustainability, the demand for clean and responsible battery production will continue to rise. Through partnerships like the one between LG Energy Solution and Huayou Cobalt, the industry can ensure the long-term sustainability and viability of electric vehicle technology.

In summary, LG Energy Solution’s partnership with Huayou Cobalt aims to establish a joint venture for battery recycling in China. The construction of two recycling facilities will contribute to the stable sourcing of raw materials needed for lithium-ion batteries. By reprocessing extracted metals into cathode materials, the companies will create a sustainable resource circulation system. This collaboration exemplifies the industry’s commitment to responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship, meeting the increasing demand for clean and sustainable battery production.
