India’s 22nd Law Commission has called for fresh suggestions on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) from stakeholders and public organisations. Individuals and groups have 30 days to provide input via online links or email. The notice states that the commission can call upon any individual or organisation for a personal hearing or discussion. The 21st Law Commission had previously requested stakeholders’ views through a questionnaire. However, in light of the importance of the UCC subject and previous court orders, the commission believes fresh deliberation is necessary. The UCC is a proposal to replace the personal laws related to family matters currently held by different religious communities in India with a common law applicable to all.
