UK Chief Rabbi and Foreign Secretary Discuss Antisemitism and Middle East Crisis

0

UNITED KINGDOM (JNS) — Sir Ephraim Mirvis, chief rabbi of the U.K., and Foreign Secretary David Lammy met on Thursday and discussed antisemitism in the U.K., the threats facing Israel and the new British government’s policy towards the war against Hamas in Gaza.

Many Jewish leaders in the U.K. are concerned that the new Labour Party government is shifting British policy away from seeing Israel as a strategic ally.

Following the meeting, Mirvis wrote on X: I was pleased to have a wide-ranging conversation with the Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy this afternoon. We discussed the imminent and vast threats facing Israel across the Middle East, UK Government decisions relating to the conflict, the urgent importance of freeing the hostages, achieving long-term peace, and the deep impact of the war in this country.

Lammy reciprocated the post on the social messaging platform, writing, Thank you @ChiefRabbi Mirvis. We will work together to stand up for the Jewish community, combat antisemitism, and promote Holocaust remembrance. This government will continue to press for peace and stability in the Middle East, a ceasefire in Gaza and release of all hostages.

A bit later in the day, Lammy wrote on X about the indirect truce negotiations between Israel and Hamas:

These talks are an opportunity to secure an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages. It is in the long-term interests of Israelis, Palestinians, and the wider region to agree this deal urgently. I thank Qatar, Egypt, and the US for their ongoing efforts in co-ordinating this vital work, at what is a critical time for security and stability across the Middle East.

The new Labour Party government has indeed taken steps against Israel of late, restoring funding to UNRWA and dropping its objection to the International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor’s request for the court to issue arrest warrant against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Britain is also reportedly considering imposing an arms embargo on Israel.

Lammy visited Israel and met with Israeli and Palestinian Authority officials soon after winning the July 4 general election and being appointed foreign secretary.

I met with U.K. hostage families just last night, who shared with me their concerns and fears for their loved ones, Lammy told reporters during his visit.

He added that he was exercising all diplomatic efforts to get a hostage deal done. He balanced his comments by also stating, I hope, too, that we see a ceasefire soon, and we bring an alleviation to the suffering and the intolerable loss of life that we’re now seeing also in Gaza.

Dominican Republic Affirms Support for Morocco’s Western Sahara Sovereignty, Plans Dakhla Consulate

Bamako — The Dominican Republic has reaffirmed its strong support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and announced plans to open a consulate in the disputed territory’s main city, Dakhla.

The declaration came during a meeting between Dominican President Luis Abinader and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on Thursday. Bourita was in the country to congratulate Abinader on his re-election.

In a statement, the Dominican Foreign Ministry said Abinader conveyed to Bourita his country’s firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. The president also expressed his belief that Morocco’s autonomy plan is the only solution to the long-standing dispute.

As a concrete step in strengthening bilateral ties, the Dominican Republic intends to establish a consular presence in Dakhla, a move that would significantly boost Morocco’s diplomatic standing in the region.

Bourita extended an invitation to Abinader to visit Morocco, a proposal the Dominican president warmly welcomed. The two countries expressed a shared desire to deepen cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, and tourism.

The Dominican Republic’s backing of Morocco’s position on Western Sahara aligns with a growing number of countries recognizing the North African kingdom’s sovereignty over the territory.

Daniel Jones struggles in Giants return; faces media scrutiny, US

0

Daniel Jones returned to the field this Saturday for the first time since tearing his ACL in November of 2023. Unfortunately, his return didn’t go the way the New York Giants hoped it would. Jones, the No. 6 pick from the 2019 draft, started off his afternoon with an unsuccessful drive that went nowhere. Things only got worse from there. On the very next drive, Jones threw an interception that was returned by Houston Texans safety Jalen Pitre for a touchdown. What made Jones’ pick-six so egregious was that he had plenty of time to throw. He ultimately decided to hold onto the football and then panic when he finally faced some pressure. And just when you thought Jones finally got into a rhythm, he threw a second interception on what was a promising drive. NFL fans are mocking Jones for this abysmal performance, expressing doubts about his readiness for the regular season. Jones will face a lot of tough questions from the New York media after today’s performance, make no mistake about it.

Crypto Startups Raise $2.7 Billion in Q2 Despite Fewer Deals

0

In a recent report by Pitchbook, it was revealed that despite a slowdown in the digital asset market, crypto startups managed to secure more venture capital funding in the second quarter. The data showed that these startups attracted a total of $2.7 billion across 503 deals, marking a 2.5% increase compared to the previous quarter. While the number of deals closed decreased by 12.5%, the rise in funding signals a positive shift in investor sentiment towards blockchain technology.

Top investors in the crypto startup sector for Q2 were highlighted as Berachain and Monad, with infrastructure projects dominating most of the funding rounds. Monad, a Layer 1 platform designed to enhance Ethereum’s scalability, emerged as a significant player in the Web3 space, alongside DeFi-specific projects like Berachain, aimed at improving Bitcoin’s security use case. Additionally, Babylon, a Bitcoin staking platform, gained notable venture capital support in the second quarter.

The report also highlighted the success of decentralized social media and gaming platforms in securing substantial funding. Farcaster, a decentralized social media protocol, raised $150 million in a Series A round, while Zentry, a blockchain-based gaming platform, secured $140 million in funding. These developments indicate a growing interest in blockchain technology’s long-term potential over short-term gains among investors.

As the market for crypto startup funding continues to evolve, Pitchbook’s analysis suggested a shift in valuation trends, with earlier stages seeing higher valuations compared to the late stage. This trend reflects the increasing competitiveness in the early investment stages within the broader venture market. If the current positive investor sentiment persists, further growth in venture funding for the crypto sector is anticipated throughout the rest of the year.

The industry’s resilience and continued investment interest are evidenced by the significant capital inflows into the crypto space. With over $102 billion raised across 5000+ rounds since June 2014, major firms like Pantera Capital and Paradigm are also scaling up their investments. Pantera’s plan to raise $1 billion in crypto funds, in particular, could mark a significant milestone, potentially becoming the largest amount raised since 2022. As the market landscape evolves, continued investor confidence and support are driving the crypto startup sector forward.

Mike Francesa Slams Mets for Controversial First Pitch Decision, US

0

Veteran sports radio talk host Mike Francesa didn’t hold back when discussing the New York Mets’ decision to invite controversial internet personality Haliey Welch to throw out the first pitch in Thursday’s loss to the Athletics.

Discussing the incident on The Mike Francesa Podcast, Francesa blasted the decision-makers for inviting Welch to appear on Camp Day, knowing that she had risen to internet fame in June after making a lewd comment in a video that went viral on social media.

I know nothing about this . . . young lady. I know she’s in her 15 minutes of fame – she just struck a chord and went viral with some sleazy answer to a man-on-the-street question, Francesa said in his nearly four-minute long rant on the topic.

The question I have is, knowing that that’s the case, that her fleeting – and it will be fleeting – fame was about something as suggestive as her answer was, what in the world would possess the Mets to bring her in to throw out the first ball? And, on top of it, on camp day.

Many fans shared Francesa’s point of view, prompting a wave of backlash on social media.

You have heard me say on numerous occasions, and it’s continued through the ownership change, that the Mets could screw up a one-car funeral, he continued.

I would think that that person spent last night not answering the phone and today running for cover while cleaning out their desk, whoever came up with that idea. Whoever in the marketing or promotional department decided that it was a good idea to bring this girl in and glorify her and shine the spotlight on her and let her throw out the first pitch, which got them utterly destroyed from coast to coast.

This is the kind of shake-your-head one where you just say, ‘What the hell are they thinking? And could you imagine when the owner is explaining to his wife exactly who this girl is?

Welch addressed the controversy on social media Friday, explaining that her appearance at the game was meant to help spread an important message.

So I guess some of the baseball community wasn’t too happy to see me yesterday, she wrote in a post on X. The main reason I went to the game was to spread awareness and donate to America’s vet dogs which pairs dogs with war veterans for a forever home.

Join me in donating to this amazing charity. I miss ya already Buddy.

In the video she shared in the post, Welch is introduced to Buddy, the Mets Vet Dog, who made his debut in May.

Sponsored by the Amazin’ Mets Foundation, America’s VetDogs serves as a nonprofit foundation that works to provide service dogs to first responders and veterans with disabilities.

San Diego Residents Face Felony Charges for Transporting Illegal Migrants near Ocotillo, California, US

0

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Two San Diego residents returning from a trip to an Indian casino are facing federal felony charges after picking up hitchhikers near Ocotillo, California.

Alan Joseph Cunningham and Derek Paul Mayne were arrested last Tuesday along State Route 2 after their Ford Expedition allegedly made a U-turn as it came upon a U.S. Border Patrol highway checkpoint.

Border agents observed the maneuver, deemed it suspicious and followed the vehicle to a gas station in Ocotillo. The SUV appeared heavily laden in the back and both of its rear passenger-side windows appeared cracked, the agents reported.

When the Expedition entered Interstate 8, the agents stopped it to conduct an immigration check. Court records show an agent approached the vehicle and saw through one of the broken windows that someone was trying to duck down.

The agent interviewed the driver and front-seat passenger. They stated they were coming back from the Golden Acorn Casino in Campo, California, spotted hitchhikers in the middle of the road and decided to give them a ride to San Diego.

When pressed, Cunningham told the agent it was possible the hitchhikers were undocumented migrants, but that he didn’t think it was crime to give them a ride.

The two U.S. citizens and their six hitchhikers were taken to the Border Patrol’s El Centro Station, where the passengers admitted to being undocumented foreign nationals, one of them previously removed from the United States.

According to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, the migrants from the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Tlaxcala and Veracruz. They had paid or committed to pay between $10,000 and $20,000 to smugglers to take them to Tijuana and Mexicali and smuggle them into the U.S. From there, they were to be transported to jobs in Los Angeles, Chicago and other major cities in the interior of the country.

When asked why he had made a U-turn at the checkpoint, Cunningham allegedly said it was because his vehicle was not running well, and he needed to turn back to a town. He added that now he knows that it’s a crime to transport migrants unlawfully present in the country.

The complaint further states that Cunningham has previous criminal convictions stemming from the sale of narcotics and leading authorities on a high-speed chase.

Mayne also has previously been convicted for possession of narcotics, according to the complaint.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office has charged Cunningham and Mayne with transportation of illegal aliens. One of the migrants was charged for re-entry into the United States after deportation.

Arraignment for the Americans is set for Sept. 9 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lupe Rodriguez Jr. in El Centro, Calif.
