It did not take long for the Americans to hit the ground running in Marseille.

The Germans threatened to break the deadlock soon after kick-off but U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher saved the day early on, before her team-mates went down the other end and scored.

It was a wonderfully worked goal as the front three combined from right to left. Rodman’s cross pulled across the box, Swanson faked a run and took a defender out of the game, leaving the ball to roll into the path of Smith who made no mistake from close range.

It took the Europeans just 10 minutes to equalise through Giulia Gwinn, who dragged a shot across the goal and into the bottom corner.

Smith looked to restore their advantage soon after which was parried away, into the path of Swanson who reacted quickest to capitalise on the loose ball.

Just before half-time, 23-year-old Smith added her second of the game when a fortunate deflection helped her effort into the back of the net.

And, when these three aren’t scoring, they’re creating. Rodman deployed her signature ‘Trin Spin’ move to regain possession before playing it into Swanson, who in turn put second-half substitute Lynn Williams through on goal for her first of the tournament.

Six of the USA’s seven goals scored at Paris 2024 so far have come directly from this front three – two goals for Smith, three goals for Swanson, and one goal for Rodman.

Getting the best out of each player in every game of their campaign could be the key to Hayes successfully delivering the goods in her first major tournament with the USWNT.

As of right now, there are very few defenders in the world that could subsidise the threat that they offer.

Simone Biles Overcomes Injury to Lead US Gymnastics Team to Victory in Tokyo

0

Simone Biles made a remarkable return to Olympic competition on Sunday, overcoming left calf pain to kick off her multiple-medal bid.

Despite tweaking her calf while warming up for the floor exercise, the US gymnast stunned the audience with her performance.

Biles aimed to add to her four gold medals from the 2016 Rio Olympics.

She executed her signature Yurchenko double pike vault, also known as the Biles II, earning a 9.4 for execution and a total of 15.800 points despite a step back on landing. Although she stumbled on her second vault, Biles remained determined to continue.

Never in her mind, Landi said, adding that she was also confident that Biles would be ready to go for the team final on Tuesday and the individual events to follow.

Pretty amazing, was Landi’s assessment after Biles topped the all-around standings with 59.566 points.

With four of the five qualifying sessions completed, the United States led the team standings with 172.296 points.

Italy, China, Japan, Canada, and Great Britain also secured places in the final. Team contender Brazil, led by vault world champion Rebeca Andrade, was yet to compete. France’s hopes for a podium finish on home soil were dampened by errors from Melanie De Jesus Dos Santos and her team.

Biles’s return to the Olympics attracted a star-studded crowd to Bercy Arena, with celebrities like Tom Cruise, Jessica Chastain, Greta Gerwig, Ariana Grande, and Anna Wintour in attendance. Chants of U-S-A filled the arena as gymnasts made their entrance, and the roar for Biles was deafening.

Biles excelled in her balance beam routine but appeared to hurt herself while warming up for the floor exercise. After taping her left leg from calf to foot, she delivered a powerful floor routine, including her Biles I double layout with half a twist and her Biles II triple-double.

It’s incredible, US team technical lead Chellsie Memmel said. What she was able to do looking like she has soreness or something in her leg is remarkable.

By the time Biles closed her day with a clean uneven bars routine, she was already feeling better. The crowd’s ovation was overwhelming.

Teammate Sunisa Lee, who overcame two career-threatening kidney ailments since winning all-around gold in Tokyo, ranked second in the all-around standings. This sets the stage for an all-around final featuring the last two gold medalists for the first time in Olympic history. Algerian uneven bars specialist Kaylia Nemour also topped that apparatus, heading to the all-around final.

Biles led the vault and floor exercise standings and was second in the balance beam standings behind China’s Zhou Yaqin. She held onto the eighth and final berth in uneven bars with the last qualifying session yet to come.

In the Tokyo Games, Biles withdrew from multiple events to deal with the disorientating mental block known as twisties. Despite this, she earned a silver and bronze and was praised for her openness about mental health struggles.

After a two-year break, Biles came back strong, winning four world titles last year and increasing her tally to 23. At 27, she could become the oldest women’s all-around Olympic champion in 72 years and just the third woman to win more than one Olympic all-around title.

Kansas City Chiefs Star Chris Jones Sidelined with Groin Strain, US

Chiefs HC Andy Reid Gives Injury Update on DT Chris Jones

Some were wondering if Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones was granted a veteran rest day on Sunday, July 28, which would explain why he didn’t participate in training camp practice. But it turns out that, according to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, Jones suffered a groin strain during Saturday’s practice, which sidelined him on Sunday.

Big Red did not sound overly concerned with Jones’s tweaked groin. It’s likely that Jones is simply receiving extra rest to ensure he remains healthy for the start of the regular season.

Despite suffering an injury to the knee that derailed his rookie season, Reid said Johnson is going to be fine.

Sotheby’s Summer Show in London Shines Spotlight on Middle East Art & Culture, Saudi Arabia

Sotheby’s summer show in London to focus on Middle East

Sotheby’s is bringing the Middle East to London.

At the auction house’s New Bond Street location, their London galleries will be exhibiting a diverse and curated selection of Middle Eastern art and culture.

Entitled Hafla, which translates to celebration or party in Arabic, the exhibition will run from August 12 to 30. Highlights will include paintings, jewellery and calligraphy from the Islamic world and limited-edition handbags designed by Saudi Arabia’s Princess Nourah Al Faisal.

People from all over the world congregate in London over the summer, particularly from across the Middle East, Ashkan Baghestani, Sotheby’s director for Middle Eastern and contemporary art, tells The National.

We felt there would be a real demand and desire from art aficionados who are in town to see Middle Eastern art under the spotlight as they wander down New Bond Street. It also gives our regular collectors an opportunity to see a different side of the Middle Eastern art scene.

The main part of Hafla will be the section Khamseen, which is the Arabic word for 50. It highlights 50 works spanning 50 years of modern visual art from Saudi Arabia. Curated in collaboration with founder Qaswra Hafez of Hafez Gallery, it will comprise of paintings, sculptures, photography, prints and installations.

Khamseen begins with The Beginnings, which focuses on the early phases of modern art by introducing the active artistic pioneers in the kingdom between 1965 to 1980, most of whom were broadly dealing with themes of identity.

The exhibition then moves to the Awakening / Boom section that highlights artists working between the 1980s to the late 1990s, when Saudi society became more conservative. The final section, Information Superhighway, encompasses the work of young dynamic artists experimenting with various media in the early 2000s.

Taking a look at Khamseen, bringing some of the rarest and most important Saudi pioneers is a first, Baghestani adds.

With the growing appreciation of and visibility around Saudi art, it felt only natural to bring some of these gems to London and exhibit them to a very different audience.

In addition to art, there will also be a jewellery exhibition that showcases the influence of the Middle East on design. It is in partnership with A2Z Advisory in Bahrain. Expect about 60 jewellery creations to be on display, including coloured gemstones and diamonds from maisons such as Cartier, Bulgari and Van Cleef & Arpels. It runs until August 22.

The Middle East is one of the world’s leading luxury hubs, and so it was only fitting that we would dedicate a section of Hafla to the exploring the region’s impact in this arena, says Sophie Stevens, Sotheby’s jewellery specialist.

From Art Deco designs, significant diamonds and top-tier coloured gemstones, to groundbreaking contemporary jewels, there is something for every discerning jewellery collector at Hafla this summer.

The luxury section of the exhibition will also include an exclusive capsule collection of Saudi Arabian-inspired bags by luxury brand Asprey in collaboration with Princess Nourah. Five boldly designed, limited-edition bags each pay homage to the five regions of the kingdom through motifs, colour and embroidery techniques.

Incorporating something from across the Islamic world, the final portion of Hafla will be a display of rich calligraphic works from the 8th to 21st century.

It will showcase the development of Arabic script over more than a millennium of manuscript production, from Quranic manuscripts in Kufic script to the lavish illuminations of the Qajar period. It will feature 28 calligraphic works from the Bashir Mohamed Family collection, produced across the Middle East, Turkey, India, Spain and China.

One of the most exciting calligraphic works is a magnificent bifolium from the Blue Quran – showcasing the true scale and majesty of the legendary manuscript, Frankie Keyworth, Sotheby’s Islamic & Indian art specialist, says.

It is both materially opulent, written entirely in gold on large sheets of blue vellum, and visually striking, showcasing a particularly masterful Kufic script.

The diversity of works, artists and mediums from Hafla is not only part of its appeal, but shows the range and of ideas and creativity from the Middle East across various time periods that tell an overarching story about art creation from the region.

We wanted Hafla to feel like a journey, Edward Gibbs, Sotheby’s chairman for the Middle East & India, says. As you enter each gallery, you are immersed in a different moment of Middle Eastern creativity.

Former Indian Player Jude Menezes Takes on Coaching Challenge at Paris Olympics

Former India goalkeeper Jude Menezes hopes to take Japan women’s hockey team into the knockouts | Paris Olympics 2024 News – Times of India

Kolkata: Playing for India, Jude Menezes made it to the Olympics only once.
It was Sydney in 2000 where the Indian men’s hockey team failed to make it to the knockouts and finished seventh. He did compete at the World Cup two years later but never took part in the Olympics as a player again.
Twice after that, he did go to the Olympics but as part of the support staff of the New Zealand women’s hockey team. Even then success eluded him as in 2016, they finished fourth and three years back in Tokyo, the team lost to the Netherlands in the quarterfinal and finished eighth.
Now, Menezes has an even more challenging task at hand as the coach of the Japanese women’s hockey team. After taking over the team post Tokyo Olympics he guided them to a couple of titles but the going hasn’t been easy.
Despite the odds though he was able to guide them to the Paris Olympics and it was a huge achievement for the former India goalkeeper. Since then, the team has again struggled but Menezes is rather hopeful of making it to the knockouts.
We are taking one match at a time initially. We are in a tough pool where we got four teams ranked above us but it doesn’t matter. What matters is the performance on the day. And we need to win at least two games to be among the top-four teams and make it to the knockouts, said Menezes ahead of Japan’s opener against Germany on Sunday.
To make sure they are at their best in Paris, Japan played a couple of matches against the Netherlands in Zwolle, Netherlands, and Menezes believes it was one of the preparations that they could have got.
It’s very critical because they are the best team in the world. The pace that they play at is a great learning for us because we usually don’t get the opportunity to play against them. So just giving this exposure to my players was very beneficial because every other team that we play in the Olympics will be lesser than the Dutch, he added.
Besides the matches in Zwolle, they also played a few warm-up games in Paris but he believes the team hasn’t reached its full potential yet and that they can perform even better.
It’s satisfying to see the steady progress. We are still learning, still growing and it’s good to see that we are heading in the right direction. So, the Olympics will be a good test to see where we are, added the Mumbai-born coach.
But I am never satisfied. I am always looking to be better. To a certain extent maybe I am satisfied but I do believe we can do a lot better. So, the quest for improving and the quest for excellence is always ongoing.
Well, they certainly will have to be much better than what they have been so far to make it to the knockouts because, besides Germany, they will be facing off against China, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands in the other group matches.
Not only did they finish fifth in the Nations Cup in June, but they also lost all their matches during a tri-nation Test series in Australia where China was the other competing nation. But Menezes does have the coaching acumen to turn things around and hopefully, he will be able to do that over the next couple of weeks.

Syrian Base Hit by Missiles Amid US Military Presence in Deir ez-Zur

0

Five missiles struck a US base at a Conoco gas field in eastern Syria, with three hitting the base and two in its vicinity. US helicopters were promptly deployed following the attack. This incident adds to a series of targeted assaults on US and coalition forces since October 2023. Tensions in the region have escalated due to the US’s support of Israel in light of recent conflicts in the Gaza Strip and mounting casualties. The US military’s presence in Syria encompasses strategic territories holding the country’s largest oil and gas fields, a move deemed as occupation and piracy by the Syrian government. Former President Trump’s candid declaration of securing Syrian oil has carried on under the current Biden administration, perpetuating military involvement in the region.

Mysterious St. Johns River Monster Legend Revived in Astor, US

0

Decades ago, a 35-foot-long creature was allegedly seen along the St. Johns River in Astor, sparking rumors of a mysterious beast lurking in the waters nearby.

Boaters who saw the so-called St. Johns River Monster described it as grey, horned, four-legged, and with an appetite for hyacinths. Strangely, witness accounts reported seeing it either in the river or on land.

According to newspaper articles from 1953, witnesses ranging from Lake Monroe up to Lake George reported sightings of the monster. The Orlando Sentinel spoke with Buck Dillard, a longtime Astor resident and river guide who was the first to see the creature while fishing in Lake Dexter.

Rumors of the monster spread to the point where even then-President Homer Wright of the Astor Chamber of Commerce believed in its existence. While some believed it to be a prehistoric creature, biologists suggested it might have been an exaggerated manatee or a simple cow with eelgrass on its head.

Regardless of the various theories, the legend of the St. Johns River Monster drew crowds of tourists to Astor in hopes of catching a glimpse of the alleged beast. Whether it was a prehistoric creature, a manatee, or a cow, the mystery of the monster still lingers in the memory of those who encountered it.
