Office workers have been torn over a viral photo of a coworker that showed off their extreme measure to protect their milk from being consumed by others – a padlock. The post in the r/CasualUK subreddit entitled ‘Peak pettiness or justifiable security in the office kitchen?’, has triggered an intense debate between office workers, with many holding opposing views on the matter.

The highest rated comment in the Reddit thread, with over 5,000 likes, said: “It’s kind of both at once. If people didn’t take what’s not theirs there would be no need. I wouldn’t go that far with milk but people lost food at the last place I was at. 12 hour shift with no food ain’t a joke” emphasizes how common occurrences of theft at the workplace can lead to extreme measures.

Anecdotally, other Reddit users recounted similar experiences, with one user saying that during a 5 year stint in a London office, the inconceivable amounts of lunch theft made the padlock a reasonable action to take. Another commenter recalled an instance in a factory where the boss advised everyone to bring their own tea and coffee supplies due to the theft of supplies from others.

On the flip side, one Reddit user brought up the fact that while they understand why the person would feel compelled to take the extreme measure of using a padlock, there’s nothing worse than going to make a cup of tea or coffee and finding out that someone already finished the milk.

Some used a bit of humour to address the situation, with one user commenting “The worst part is, they’re working from home”, in reference to the majority of workers who have been stuck working from home due to the pandemic.

At the end of the day it comes down to each individual and what they require for their personal comfort, either way, it is understandable to want to protect a much needed caffeine boost or comfort food. Ultimately, the only way to stop the theft of food at the workplace is for everyone to be respectful and aware that their actions can affect others.
