Kerala Set to Become Fully Digitalised State on Thursday

Kerala is set to become India’s first ‘Total e-Governance’ state as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is making the declaration official tomorrow. This momentous achievement follows decades of effort by the government of Kerala, who made it their mission to become the nation’s most digital society.

Kerala’s mission to become India’s most digital society has been made possible by an integrated single window service delivery mechanism called e-Sevanam. Launched in order to ensure the efficient delivery of over 800 government services online, e-Sevanam has successfully provided citizens for accessible, transparent and inclusive e-governance.

Health, education, land revenue, documentation of properties, public distribution system and social security payouts are just a few of the domains that have been digitized, thereby making all vital services available via a single window system. The introduction of the Total e-Governance initiative will ensure that even the less privileged and marginalized will be able to benefit from these services, in true measure of e-inclusiveness.

Kerala IT Mission is the nodal agency responsible for the implementation of this vast digitization and service integration efforts. Their goal is to make all the integrated services easily available to everyone, irrespective of their social standing.

An apt example of how far the state of Kerala has come in the pursuit of true digital democracy, the Total e-Governance ecosystem is a testament to the state’s resolve and determination in the battle for digital freedom. Kerala’s IT mission has set a great example for governments across the country, showing them that true digital success rests with the people.

Alarming Drop in Gujarat’s Wolf Population – Only 150 Remain

A recent census conducted by the Gujarat Forest Department uncovered a worrying decline in the state’s wolf population, with only 150 left in the region. On May 8, the census recorded 10 wolves in the Little Rann of Kutch, 30 in the Velavadar sanctuary, Bhavnagar, and 30 in the Gir sanctuary.

It is believed that the main driver of this decreasing population is the loss of natural habitats due to activities such as deforestation and urbanisation. Prior to this census, the 2018-19 pan-India survey of wolves estimated Gujarat’s wolf population to be at 494, the third highest after Madhya Pradesh (772) and Rajasthan (532).

Yadvendradev Jhala and Robert Giles’s paper on The Status and Conservation of the Wolf in Gujarat and Rajasthan, India recommends a host of solutions for managing wolf conservation. They include, encouraging public support and education, imposing legal advice, providing compensation for wolf-killed livestock, conducting surveys of wolf populations and research on the dynamics of select populations, preserving key habitats and eliminating stray dogs from wolf conservation areas.

Mulubhai Bera, Gujarat’s Forest Minister, has yet to comment on the idea of conducting wolf censuses in the region. In 2020, there has only been one sighting of a wolf in the wild ass habitats of the Little Rann of Kutch and Greater Rann of Kutch.

The findings of the Gujarat wolf census underscore the importance of proper conservation of habitats and wildlife in the region. It is essential for the preservation of the local biodiversity and maintenance of a balanced ecosystem. It is important that local stakeholders continue to take proactive steps to build public awareness, support legal protection and conduct further research into the population dynamics and ecology of wolves.
