Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced on Wednesday that India needs to focus on connecting the Indian market to innovation, and putting competency ahead of degrees. This would make the country more self-reliant, and become one of the leading economies. He was addressing the annual summit of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

In the upcoming days, a new curriculum must be developed to prepare the youth for the opportunities that abound in the booming digital, technological and innovative sectors. The new National Education Policy (NEP) will come in handy in this regard, Pradhan said. He suggested that India should combine innovation with its market to brand its technology, and must trust the strength of the youth and the intellectual capabilities of the country.

The minister noted that the NEP stresses on skills and schooling. It advocates the incorporation of vocational and skill studies into the education from the sixth grade onwards. He urged the government and market stakeholders to be better linked to each other in order to attain degree to competency paradigm shift. With quality education, skill improvement and financial empowerment, India is becoming a preferred destination, he said.

Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT Madras) has recently launched 15 Centres of Excellence under the Union government’s Institute of Eminence scheme. The aim of these Centres is to empower higher education institutions and become world-class teaching and research establishments. The research initiatives aim to develop next-generation technologies and create a significant impact in domestic and overseas markets.

IIT Madras was selected under the Institute of Eminence in 2019 and have established several research initiatives in diverse fields. Out of the 68 research initiatives across 21 technology clusters, 15 were shortlisted and granted Centre of Excellence status. The Centre of Excellence is expected to reach the top five in the world in terms of research and innovation. The facilities serve as hubs that attract talent and foster interdisciplinary collaborations. The involving of 400 faculty members would help foster innovative solutions with the aim of making an impact at home and abroad.

IIT Madras Director, V Kamakoti, commented on the launched stating, “These centres are predominantly interdisciplinary, involving faculty from more than three departments and working on niche technologies. A substantial amount of IoE funding has been invested in the development of research”.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has given its stamp of approval for the setting up of additional electric vehicle (EV) charging points in New Delhi’s Lutyens’ area. This initiative is aimed at curbing the use of fossil fuels and promoting eco-friendly transportation options. During the council meeting, it was also decided to revive 27 executive engineer posts in the civil engineering department in order to ensure greater efficiency. Educational policies were also discussed with the council proposing the recruitment rules for the post of nursery assistant teacher.

REIL (Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Limited), KELTRON (Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited), and HLL Infratech Services are the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) with which the NDMC will be collaborating for the public EV charging points. These will be set up under the national Electric Mobility Program. As a result of the revamping, the technical and commercial losses in power supply are expected to reduce from the current 15 percent to below 12 percent. Other benefits that are hoped for include improved reliability of power supply, shorter outage time, and better load demand monitoring.

RDSS (Revamped Distributional Sector Scheme) was also approved during the meeting which is expected to keep the distribution and transmission of power both financially and operationally efficient. UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) and MHA (MInistry of Home Affairs) approval will also be obtained for the notification of the nursery assistant teacher post recruitment rules in the Gazette.

The aim of all these measures is to make the civil departments of NDMC as efficient and effective as possible. The EV charging points will be especially beneficial to the environment, allowing people to contribute to a greener future. Ecological friendliness will be fostered and as a result, the pollution rates in Delhi might soon see a downward trend. The NDMC is making sure to make the civil departments efficient and adopt a sustainable lifestyle which contributes to the betterment of Delhi’s ecology.
