Zee Entertainment Records First Loss in Three Years Amidst Weakening Advertising Demand and Rising Costs

India’s Zee Entertainment Enterprises recently suffered its first loss in three years. Advertisers had reduced their marketing budgets, causing total income to decline by 9.9% to 21.26 billion rupees. Expenses also shot up, leading to the company recording a consolidated net loss of 1.96 billion rupees for the fourth quarter ending March 31.

A slowdown in ad spending was blamed for domestic advertisement revenue dropping by 10% during the quarter. Zee also withdrew funding from tech startup SugarBox due to inflation and conditions for an impending merger with Sony Group Corp’s India unit. As a result, Zee experienced difficulty with creditors, though it settled the issue in March. However, recent reports of a ruling by India’s regulator against an entity of Essel Group, which owns Zee, may force the National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange to reconsider their approvals of the merger. Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said the company is aiming to complete the merger by the end of the fiscal year.

Zee’s results paled in comparison to TV Today Network Ltd, New Delhi Television Ltd, and TV18 Broadcast Ltd, which all reported a drop in profits between 76% and 98% in the quarter. Shares of Zee were down 1.08% ahead of the earnings and 11.6% in the March quarter.

The company mentioned in this article is Zee Entertainment Enterprises. It is an Indian media company that is a subsidiary of Essel Group. The company engages in television broadcasting, film production, and digital content creation. It owns several leading television channels such as Zee TV, Zee Cinema, Zee Marathi, and Zee Tamil.

The person mentioned in this article is Kenichiro Yoshida, CEO of Sony Group which looks to merge with the India unit of Zee Entertainment Enterprises. Yoshida is the third president and CEO of Sony Corporation, which is headquartered in Tokyo. He has held various leadership roles since joining Sony in 1983 and was appointed president in April 2018. Health Ministry to Amend Rules to Add Anti-Tobacco Warnings for OTT Programmes

The Health Ministry of India is bound to issue a notification for the amendment of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Rules, 2004. This aims to mandate the OTT platforms to show anti-tobacco warnings and disclaimers which are seen in television programmes and movies released in theatres.

As per the draft notification, online curated content displaying or showing the usage of tobacco products is obligated to show health spots of 30 seconds along with an antic-smoking message Message appears as a static message on the screen bottom when the content shows tobacco products or its usage. Audio-visual disclaimers of 20 seconds explaining the harmful effects of smoking are mandated at the beginning and middle of the programme. Additionally, “Tobacco causes cancer” or “Tobacco kills” warnings must be displayed.

This is to completely neutralize the campaigning of tobacco use and its effects during the online program streaming. OTT Platforms, especially the generation of teens, are also being taken into consideration where the usage of tobacco products are commonly seen in web series, movies and other shows.

Ranjit Singh, an advocate in the Supreme Court, claims that this amendment to the rules will make India as the global leader in regulating tobacco-promoting entertainment medium. He further urges that the COTPA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act), since 2003, has taken significant action to ban the tobacco advertising.

Moreover, Binoy Mathew is the Program Manager at the Voluntary Health Association of India who positively advocates the amendment, as the increasing demand for streaming services during the pandemic has led to displaying students in school uniform smoking tobacco quite frequently. He believes that this amendment, once issued, will bring a huge change in the online curated content.

Google searches for the ‘COTPA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003’ reveal that the act was enforced to have a check on the use of tobacco. It bans the direct and indirect advertisement of tobacco products and discourages its active users. This Act benefits the citizens of India in terms of reducing the damaging effects of tobacco and imposing a restriction on its use.

Thus, the intention of these amendments is to set an example to the world that India can be a world leader in terms of tobacco regulations. With these steps taken, India has made sure to discourage and diminish the use of tobacco products and thus, protect the citizens of the nation from hazardous health conditions.

Financial Services in APJ Sees Huge Increase in Web Application and API Attacks: Akamai Report

A recent Akamai report has revealed a staggering surge in web application and API attacks against financial services organizations in the Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ) region, with a 248 percent increase from the previous year. These attacks present a critical concern for financial services organizations, as their expansion into digital products and services create larger attack surfaces for cyber criminals to exploit.

Reuben Koh, Security Technology and Strategy Director (APJ) at Akamai, stated that this rise in attacks is a direct result of the significant investment made in APJ towards digital transformation in recent years. And this investment pays off – APJ experienced an average of ten million attack a day for the past 24 months, with days reaching sixty million in attack count.

The study further found that Local File Inclusion (LFI) attacks were the most common attack vector in APJ, representing a 154 percent increase in attacks year-over-year and surpassing XSS and SQLi attacks. This is due to the ever growing vulnerability of PHP-based servers, used by popular platforms such as Facebook, WordPress, and Wikipedia.

Furthermore, the report revealed differences in web and API attack patterns across APJ’s local markets. For example, Australia and Japan witnessed the highest growth in web application and API attacks against finance, attributing to its established status as an important financial hub. However, attack patterns in both countries were different; Australia experienced more persistent attacks while Japan was characterized by large-scale attacks. Additionally, India experienced a surge in retail and commerce sectors, indicating an increase in e-commerce spending in the country.

To stay ahead of cyber criminals, it is essential that organizations remain updated on the latest attack trends and best practices. Akamai, a cloud company that powers and protects life online, recommends investing in advanced technologies and consistently refining risk mitigation strategies.
