Members of Delhi University’s Academic Council are calling for an immediate resignation of the St. Stephen’s College Principal, John Varghese. The four members from the Democratic Teachers’ Front argue that he has already served his five-year tenure and that someone else should be appointed in order to move forward with promotions and appointments.

The university wrote to St Stephen’s Governing Body Chairman, asserting that Varghese’s election to extend his tenure was against the due process. Consequently, the demand from the four members of the council is gaining steam and their statement suggests that Varghese must be removed to accommodate for a new principal.

The council members are also addressing other issues such as the salary delays and grant delays of the twelve Delhi University Colleges funded by the government. Furthermore, they are critical of Delhi University’s notification to open up the colleges between 8 AM to 8 PM without any discussion with the Academic Council and the Executive Council and have voiced their disagreement since it could potentially raise infrastructure and safety issues.

Finally, the council members submitted a protest against what they saw as an “illegal” implementation of written exams for the selection of physical education directors and librarians.

The BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has criticized the decision of the Himachal Pradesh government to scrap Non-Practicing Allowance (NPA) for doctors, calling it “anti-people”. BJP spokesperson Randhir Sharma has demanded that the Congress government withdraw the decision immediately.

The HP government notified on Thursday that doctors recruited in Health and Family Welfare, Medical Education, Dental, Ayush and Animal Husbandry departments will not be entitled to NPA. Sharma stated that pay cuts will discourage citizens from taking up government jobs, resulting in a degraded health system. Moreover, the notification does not specify whether doctors will be allowed to do private practice.

Further, Sharma accused the Congress government of hiking power tariffs and stopping the provision of free school uniforms, bags and water bottles to students of government schools, thus putting additional burden on the locals of the state.
