Exercise Without Weightlifting: Discover Resistance Training

0

Weightlifting isn’t always necessary to build muscle and achieve that toned look. Resistance training is an effective, convenient alternative to free weights that you can do without stepping foot into the gym. There are multiple forms of resistance training, with the most popular being free weights, gym machines, elastic bands, weighted medicine balls, and of course, bodyweight resistance training.

Bodyweight resistance training can be done anytime, anywhere, and doesn’t require a gym membership or equipment. Examples of such exercises include sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, crunches, and squats. When compared to free weights, resistance band training has been shown to provide similar strength gains and results while being less likely to cause injuries. Resistance exercise offers countless health benefits such as improved cardiac and cardiorespiratory health and increased muscle mass.

Similarly to resistance training, strength training is also focused on building muscle mass and strength, but typically requires free weights and is usually tailored towards achieving large, bulky muscles over time.

Overall, whichever form of resistance training speaks to you is the one you should pursue—you can tailor your goals to fit the exercise type, and make sure to exercise at least twice per week for optimal results.

Michael Fredericson, MD of Stanford University’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a big backer of bodyweight resistance training. He believes that resistance exercise is a more movement-varied, primarily non-weight-bearing exercise modality that has been shown to be highly effective for preserving and even gaining muscle mass.

Loren Fishman, MD and professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Columbia University and the medical director of Manhattan Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation also lauds bodyweight resistance training; he explains that this type of resistance still works muscles by opposing them against a weight or force, only now the opposition comes from one’s own body weight.

For even further guidance and insight, Jeremy Loenneke, PhD and associate professor of exercise science at the University of Mississippi advises against considering any one form of resistance training as being “better” than the other, and to instead tailor goals to the particular exercise type.

Finally, for more celebrity-style inspiration, DJ McDonough, PhD and cardiovascular disease researcher at the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health reminds us that Jennifer Aniston, Duchess Meghan, and many others are promoting the strength and power of Pilates.

Overall, resistance training is key in our goal to achieve a healthy, balanced, and fit lifestyle. With bodyweight resistance training, you can conveniently level up on muscle mass or body tone while avoiding gym memberships and free weights, all while still reaping the same rewards and results. It is all about finding a workout routine that speaks to you and committing to always make time for at least two resistance training sessions per week.

Creating a Plan to Advance After Graduating College

0

Graduating college is a significant milestone in life and it can bring lots of exciting changes. However, it can also bring stress, fear and anxiety, which may lead to mental health issues. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, 75 percent of mental health conditions develop before the age of 24. Parents and family members can recognize the possible signs of post-commencement stress disorder and take steps to get help.

For starters, most college graduates are leaving the comfortable structure of the academic setting and a familiar environment, which can be emotionally overwhelming. Building new connections and learning how to manage time can add to the stress. It is also important to recognize that because college students have been in an academic setting for nearly 20 years, they may be prepared for the transition to the “real world.”

One of the keys to helping with post-graduation stress is to have a plan and goals in place. Encouraging students to stay connected with others, focus on new interests, create their own structure, and make new connections is a great start. Also, career coaching and mental health counseling are two options to help recent grads with any stress-related feelings they may be dealing with.

It is also important to note that the organization mentioned in the article, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, is a non-profit organization that advocates for the rights and dignity of people with mental health issues. Their mission is to provide support, education and advocacy to those who are affected by mental health conditions.

The person mentioned in this article, Brandi Gibson, is a licensed marital and family therapist and a licensed drug and alcohol counselor in Oklahoma City. She has experience in working in the higher education setting and is specifically passionate about post-graduation and mental health. She has written books and columns, and speaks at events to advocate for individuals affected by mental health conditions and to spread awareness about the importance of early intervention.

Witnesses have described the horrific moment an 11-year-old boy was struck by a police van in Lancaster on May 25th following an emergency call. A tragic accident occurred on Owen Road, leaving the unnamed child in critical condition at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. Lancashire Police released a statement expressing their sympathy for the boy’s loved ones and the investigation into the collision is now underway by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

According to reports, the impact of the crash was severe enough to knock over a nearby traffic light. It is unclear if the young boy had any links to a building at the scene that had been a secondary school. To gain further understanding of the event, police are asking for any witnesses or video footage to come forward.

Several bystanders have already provided their accounts of the incident, with one man expressing his concern to the Daily Mail. He said, “What happened is awful. He is just a little boy. Everyone is hoping and praying he gets better.” Another woman, biking the area prior to the crash, commented about the speed and quantity of police cars arriving on the scene with their sirens on.

The accident occurred days after the tragic death of two teenage boys in Wales when they were struck by a police van and the IOPC is also conducting an investigation into this separate event.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is an independent investigative body set up in 2017 to look into complaints against police officers throughout England and Wales. The organisation is responsible for ensuring the police are held accountable for their actions while protecting public trust in the police and the criminal justice system. They do this through the investigation of complaints against police and the examination of whether police may have behaved incorrectly, as well as by monitoring police training and practice. The IOPC is also responsible for monitoring the police’s response to serious or sensitive incidents.

The 11-year-old boy remains in critical condition and the IOPC’s investigations will only bring us closer to understanding the tragic events of May 25.

Bringing Joy to the Holidays with Dementia

0

The holidays can be especially difficult for those affected by dementia. For those living with dementia, their caregivers, and loved ones, the season can bring stress and apprehension rather than joy and cheer. But with some creativity and flexibility, the holidays can still be meaningful and memorable.

Planning ahead is key. It’s important to consider the person with dementia’s preferences and abilities in order to create the most comfortable environment. Simple things such as discussing and deciding on plans together, and providing a limitation of guests and activities to avoid overstimulation can be incredibly helpful in allowing them to participate in the activities they love. Holiday meals can be an overwhelming and disorienting experience for those with dementia; be respectful of their need to disengage and provide a comfortable place for them to retreat to when needed.

The Family Caregivers Center of Mercy and Mercy Medical Center have adopted a more contemporary perspective of dementia that emphasizes fostering an inclusive environment. This plans to prioritize the wellbeing of those with dementia, promoting giving them opportunities to express themselves and feel in control of their life, while still providing safety and support.

This approach recognizes that the holiday season doesn’t have to lack joy and happiness for those living with dementia. With thoughtful planning and understanding of what the individual needs and can participate in, it is possible for those affected by dementia to still enjoy the season and make great memories. Small moments of joy and connection, even if it’s just enjoying a sip of cocoa or reminiscing about a favorite ornament, can go a long way.

Kathy Good volunteers as executive director at the Family Caregivers Center of Mercy in Cedar Rapids. Kathy was the caregiver for her husband, Dave Good, who passed away in 2015, 12 years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The Center of Mercy works to provide education, counseling, and support services to assist caregivers and their families, offering guidance to understand and adjust to changes in their loved ones’ behavior and lifestyle. Their programs are often tailored to individuals, and create an inclusive and supportive environment for those living with dementia and for their families.

Students for Fairness India Organize Protest in Kolkata Against Education Policy Changes, Highlighting its Negative Effects on Underprivileged Students

On Friday, a powerful protest led by the Student Federation of India (SFI) against the new education policy (NEP) implemented by the central government commenced in Kolkata, a city renowned for its contributions to the Bengal Renaissance. With hundreds of student activists from various universities participating in the day-night rally from College Street in Central Kolkata, the protest highlighted the detrimental impact of the NEP on the education of underprivileged students.

Former Vice Chancellor Prof Pabitra Sarkar, Poet Mandakranta Sen, Prof Ambikesh Mahapatra and theatre activist Chandan Sen joined the protest to express their support. They warned against the NEP’s proposed four-year degree program, one-year master’s course, and communalization of the educational system. Prof Sarkar and the other esteemed education figures argued that such alterations would have an adverse effect on students’ future.

The demonstration received a gushing response from the crowd who chanted slogans in support of the cause. The SFI State Committee, led by SFI State Secretary Srijan Bhattacharya, boldly confronted the BJP and TMC governments for their united stance regarding the NEP. Bhattacharya denounced attempts to introduce RSS-backed “Manuwadi” elements to history syllabi and cautioned against crippling students through credit-point based degree programs.

For its part, the state government formed a high-powered committee led by Jadavpur University VC Suranjan Das to review the contents of the NEP and provide its recommendations within the next month.

SFI State President Pratikur Rehman also criticized the TMC government for withholding college body elections and curbing democratic processes, prohibiting students from voicing their opinion. The Student Federation of India (SFI) is a left-affiliated student organisation that serves as the preeminent youth voice in the country, giving India’s youth a platform to realise their political ideals. Through its nationwide campaigns on various social and educational issues, it endeavours to ensure exceptional quality education for all.

Impact of CMs Boycotting NITI Aayog Meeting on State’s Development

Chief Ministers of several opposition-ruled states have decided to not attend the upcoming NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting, held annually to review the development agenda across India. By doing this, government sources have claimed that these CMs are effectively ‘boycotting the development’ of their states.

The meeting, which is presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be held on Saturday and will focus on various issues such as infrastructure, investments, and economy of India, among others. Moreover, over 100 issues which are of national importance will be discussed, making it increasingly difficult for the states which will not participate in the meeting to benefit from it.

At the last governance council meeting, around 40 key areas were identified and a joint resolution was established between the Centre and the states. In addition, the meet also focussed on developing a modern urban development model, minimising compliances and making it easier for urban areas to develop in the country as well as increase women empowerment through various means.

Moreover, the meetings have also addressed the promotion of technology by facilitating the installation of 5G networks all over the country. Additionally, they sought to make the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings mandatory for universities and agricultural universities, to promote higher education and its reforms.

Further, they also recognized the need for agricultural diversification to improve its viability and the well-being of farmers as well as leveraged the Foreign Producer Organisations (FPOs) to promote the exports of farm products.

Nevertheless, the boycotting of this particular meeting by the opposition-ruled CMs might lead to them missing out some of the developments which other states might benefit from, causing them to not have the development they should.

NITI Aayog is a policy think-tank of the Government of India, established with the aim to achieve sustainable development goals, with cooperative federalism as a basis. It is an initiative of the Government of India to allow more participation and involvement of state governments in India’s economic policy-making, and also to achieve the goals in the development cycle for the overall progress of India. The Governing Council Meeting is a key platform that allows states and the Centre to discuss and resolve major development issues.
