Is Amul’s Expansion a Threat to Local Co-Operatives?

Amidst the release of a letter from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to the Union Minister of Co-operatives, Amit Shah, concerns have been raised about the expanding presence of Amul in the dairy sector and its impact on smaller, local dairy co-operatives. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, which markets their dairy products under the name Amul, has expanded to Tamil Nadu by opening a chilling center and processing unit in the Krishnagiri district. They also plan to purchase milk in the shed areas of Tamil Nadu’s Aavin local co-operative. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister expressed concern about the unhealthy competition that would arise from two dairy co-operatives working in the same area, and the potentially negative effects on Aavin. He noted that regional co-operatives have been instrumental in developing the dairy industry in their specific states and are better equipped to engage and support producers. Experts have weighed in on the potential impacts of Amul’s expansion and whether or not the Tamil Nadu government can prevent the cooperative from purchasing milk within the state using legislation.

Amul is a Gujarat-based dairy co-operative marketing federation that sells its branded goods throughout the country. The company operates in partnership with around 3.6 million owners and has supplied services to the dairy industry since 1946.
