A Delhi court has directed an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) to appear in person and explain why an ex-councillor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and his sister were wrongly accused of unauthorised construction on their property in 2019 when the property had been sold in 2017. Metropolitan Magistrate Anshul Mehta ordered the ACP to file a report and has also called for a report from the Deputy Commissioner of MCD, West District. The Court has scheduled the next hearing for July 8. The court has questioned why the IO had not made an effort to determine the property owner in 2019. The court also noted that when the notice was issued, no construction was in progress. The ex-councillor, Gurmukh Singh, had sought the court’s intervention after an MCD official registered an FIR against him, alleging unauthorised construction on his former property.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leaders organized protests in various parts of western UP to demand the fulfillment of the government’s promises. Farmers claim they have received bills despite the state budget’s claim to waive 100% electricity charges for farmers with private tube wells.

The UP State Budget had allocated INR 1,500 crore as a subsidy to UPPCL to subsidize the costs of providing free electricity to private tube wells. Farmers are protesting and calling for the installation of electric meters on tube wells to cease if the government is genuinely concerned about farmers.
