India Should Condemn Russia for Ukraine War as the Largest Democracy

India, being the largest democracy, cannot turn a blind eye to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine if it wants to expand its influence worldwide and handle similar issues like cracking down on Myanmar’s military regime. According to Human Rights Watch Executive Director Tirana Hassan, India is projecting itself as the world’s largest democracy, and it is disappointing to see it turning a blind eye to some of the most serious violations of human rights and international law. Hassan has urged India to condemn Russia’s actions and become a more active participant in the international community. Chidambaram labels BJP’s 9-year rule as an all-round disaster and criticizes decision to remove Rs 2000 note

The BJP government’s nine-year tenure has been a complete failure on all fronts, according to senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram. In a media address, he criticized the government’s domestic policies, foreign relations, security, and the economy. He called the recent withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 notes foolish, especially in light of the high poverty rate in India. Chidambaram also expressed concerns about the state of democracy and the growing gap between the central and state governments.

In terms of foreign relations, Chidambaram stated that India’s relationships with neighboring countries such as Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka have soured due to the government’s ineffective foreign policies. He claimed that China has encroached upon Indian-held territory while strengthening its alliance with Pakistan, which has spread the security threat to India’s borders. Chidambaram also criticized the government’s handling of security issues, affirming that security threats are not being discussed in Parliament.

Regarding the economy, he cited persistent inflation, growing inequalities, and the highest unemployment rate at 7.5 percent. Chidambaram believes that this is a far cry from the 9% average growth rate during the Dr. Manmohan Singh era.

India Bond Yields Increase Amid U.S. Peers’ Rising Trend

Indian government bond yields rose slightly on Monday, following the trend of the surge in US yields due to increasing bets for another rate hike by the Federal Reserve. The benchmark 7.26% 2033 bond yield increased to 7.0302% from 7.0081% during the previous session. Debendra Kumar Dash, Senior Vice President at AU Small Finance Bank, said that Indian bond yields closely follow US Treasuries, and this trend will likely continue for the next several trading days. The rise in US yields is due to expectations that the Federal Reserve will implement another interest rate hike, either in June or July, after consumer spending data showed a slight increase in annual inflation. The 10-year US yield was at 3.82%, rising 13 basis points last week. The market is also anticipating the release of India’s growth data for January-March, which could provide an indication of how the Reserve Bank of India will react at its monetary policy meeting next week.

Indian Wrestlers Face Criminal Charges Over Sexual Abuse Protests

The Indian police have pressed charges against several athletes protesting against sexual abuse within the Wrestling Federation of India. Wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat, attempted to march towards the Indian parliament on Sunday following a month of demonstrations. They were stopped by authorities who accused them of illegally protesting during the government inauguration of the new legislative building. The police have filed complaints against the wrestlers for causing disturbance and protesting illegally. Meanwhile, accusations of sexual abuse and harassment by WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and coaches have been denounced by many of India’s top wrestlers, who have been publically demanding his resignation.

The Wrestling Federation of India has been at the center of controversy over the past few months, with allegations of sexual abuse and harassment committed by its president and coacheswith impunity. Several wrestlers have been on the streets protesting against the sexual abuse directly accusing its president of involvement in the matter. Singh, who is a lawmaker of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, has continuously claimed innocence and called the allegations a political conspiracy, while refusing to resign from office.

It is disappointing to see charges being pressed against athletes who were protesting against sexual abuse and harassment. This is a clear attempt to silence individuals who are speaking out against injustice. The Indian government must take strict action against those who are guilty of sexual abuse and harassment. It is essential to create a safe space for athletes to speak out and be heard without any fear of repercussions. Such measures must be taken to ensure that sports organizations take action against such heinous crimes.
