SC dismisses plea against eligibility criterion for IIT JEE Advanced

The Supreme Court of India has rejected a plea against the eligibility criteria for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The plea challenged the requirement for candidates to score a minimum of 75% aggregate marks in their Class 12 (or equivalent) board examination. The Court declined to intervene, stating that the prerequisite had always existed before and was an educational matter. The Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) candidates were granted a waiver during the Covid-19 pandemic, but subsequently, this rule was revived. The apex court emphasized that education matters should be left to experts.

IITs are a group of autonomous engineering and technology institutes offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses in engineering, sciences, management, and humanities. Established in 1951, IIT Delhi became the first IIT to be established. These institutes are recognized worldwide and are known for producing highly skilled graduates who are in high demand in the job market.

The lawyer for the aspirants submitted that the applicant had scored 92 percentile in JEE Mains and was eligible to appear in JEE Advance. However, she would not be granted admission even if she qualifies as her board exam score was less than 75%. The aspirants who passed Class 12 or equivalent examination with 75% or more marks or must be within the category-wise top 20 percent of the successful candidates in their class 12 or equivalent examination are eligible candidates to appear for JEE Advanced.

The news highlights the court’s decision regarding the eligibility criteria for admission to IITs. The Supreme Court provided its verdict unambiguously, emphasizing that education matters should be left to the experts. The decision will ensure that IIT aspirants who fulfill the eligibility criteria have a fair opportunity to compete at the JEE (Advanced) level.
