Doctors at a private hospital in New Delhi have successfully restored the hearing ability of an 18-year-old boy who suffered hearing loss due to excessive earphone use. Prince, from Gorakhpur, used to listen to music for long hours with his earphones snugly fitted in his ears and even shared them with friends, which led to an ear infection that started a few years back with pain and discharge. Despite undergoing mastoid surgery twice at a local hospital, the treatment resulted in further impact on his hearing ability. However, Dr. Ankush Sayal, an ENT specialist at Primus Hospital, was able to restore Prince’s hearing by performing a mastoidectomy with ossiculoplasty (partial titanium ossiculoplasty implant placement) surgery. The patient was discharged the following day and confirmed significant improvement in hearing through audiometry conducted six weeks after surgery. Dr. Sayal pointed out that earphones can cause humidity within the ear canal, leading to local infections, and advised people to limit their usage and avoid exposure to loud noise. This case highlights the need for more awareness of the risks of prolonged earphone use and for parents to monitor their children’s earphone usage.

Bihar Contractual Teachers to Protest Against New Hiring Rules

Contractual teachers in Bihar are planning extended protests following the Bihar Public Service Commission’s (BPSC) appointment of 1.70 lakh new school teachers under a standardised process. The BPSC’s formal advertisement for the recruitment of teachers through examination has been met with opposition from Niyojit Shikshak, or contractual teachers, who want the new recruitment rules withdrawn or amended. The Bihar State School Teachers (appointment, transfer, disciplinary action and service condition) Rules, 2023, will give teachers the status of state government employees with separate district cadres.
