India: Science and Arts Emerge as Most Popular Fields of Study in the Past Decade, While Commerce Suffers Stagnation – MoE Reports

A recent study by the Ministry of Education in India has revealed that science and arts have been the most popular streams among students over the last decade, while commerce has stagnated with just 14% of students opting for it. The study, which analysed Class 10 and 12 board exam results, found significant disparities in the choice of streams across states. While only 2% of students in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana opt for the arts stream, over 82% of students in states such as Tripura and Gujarat choose it. Additionally, science was found to be much less popular in Punjab, Haryana, and Assam. The ministry identified a large difference in performance among students from various boards, significant variation in pass percentages, and no level playing field for students in terms of standard as major challenges. It is planning to standardize the assessment pattern for all 60 school boards across states in the country. The study also found that 11 states contribute to 85% of school dropouts, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh.

The Ministry of Education in India is responsible for formulating policies, implementing programs, and coordinating efforts for the development of the education sector in India. Its mission is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all, with an emphasis on improving access to education and promoting innovation in teaching and learning.

School Education Secretary, Sanjay Kumar, has highlighted the need to standardize the assessment pattern for all 60 school boards across the country to address the disparities identified in the study. Kumar stated that a meeting was held earlier this month where concerns about developing a common assessment system were discussed with the states. The ministry plans to work on the standardization process of assessment to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to succeed regardless of their state or board.

Arpita Mukherjee Holds Responsibility for Cash Found in her Residences: Court Decision

Arpita Mukherjee, once a close confidant of former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, has been denied bail by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act court. This is in relation to the multi-crore school recruitment case, wherein her twin residences were found to have huge sums of cash and gold. The court extended her judicial custody until June 19, and stated that she cannot deny her responsibility in the matter. Despite Mukherjee’s claims that Chatterjee was the mastermind behind the scam, the court found evidence that she was directly involved and fully aware of the proceeds of the scam being stored in her properties. The judge deemed the central agencies’ documents against her to be serious and said that her bail prayer could not be granted on the grounds of being a woman.
