Approval Granted for Cooperative Sector’s Grain Storage Plan, CITIIS 2.0

The Indian government has approved a scheme to scale up grain storage capacity in the co-operative sector across the country. The Union Cabinet has given approval for a Rs 1 lakh crore scheme that aims to create the world’s largest grain storage capacity in the co-operative sector. According to Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur, India has a grain storage capacity of only 47 percent of its total foodgrain production, whereas large foodgrain producers like Argentina, China, the US, Brazil, and Russia have higher storage capacity than their production. The scheme aims to save foodgrains from going to waste, reduce imports, boost food security, strengthen Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), create jobs at the panchayat level, contain migration and increase farmers’ income.

In addition to the scheme, the Cabinet has approved CITIIS 2.0, aimed at promoting a circular economy and making cities cleaner among others. The funding for CITIIS 2.0 includes a loan of Rs 1,760 crore from French Development Agency and Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau and a technical assistance grant of Rs 106 crore from the EU. The CITIIS 2.0 scheme aims to supplement the climate actions of Government of India through its ongoing National programs.
