The Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, has announced that farmers who suffered crop damage due to unseasonal rains in March and April this year will receive a total compensation of Rs 181 crore ($24 million). The e-kshatipurti portal is a historic step towards ensuring transparency in the process of awarding compensation.
Government treatment of terrorism victims inconsistent: NAUP
The National Awami United Party’s women’s wing general secretary, Shikha Bandral, has criticized the Jammu and Kashmir government for its handling of innocent and non-local deaths in the region, citing the recent killing of Deepu. Deepu worked as security personnel in a local circus, hailed from Udhampur and provided for his pregnant wife, blind brother, and father alongside his own two children.
Shikha Bandral stated that the government provides different levels of compensation depending on the victim’s influence. For example, the relatives of a more high-profile victim will receive compensation of up to Rs 50 lakh and a government job, whereas poorer victims receive no such support.
Shikha Bandral is demanding that Deepu’s family be given Rs 1 crore in compensation and that a member of his family be given a government job. It was noted that no political parties were in attendance at Deepu’s funeral.
Pinky Bhagat, Devo Devi, Neetu Rani, and Nisha Kumari were also present at the press conference with Shikha Bandral.

Minors Can Easily Purchase Cigarettes in Dimapur, Nagaland
Shopkeepers in Dimapur, Nagaland were caught selling tobacco products to minors, in violation of India’s anti-tobacco regulations. To test adherence to these regulations, minors in school uniforms were sent to buy tobacco products, including cigarettes, at several shops. Out of nine paan shops, eight sold tobacco products to the minors. One shop was located within 100 meters of a school. Shopkeepers cited low profitability of tobacco sales and the prevalence of tobacco products as reasons for selling to minors. They also noted a shift towards smokeless tobacco products among young people, particularly among girls. The only shop that refused to sell tobacco to a minor was one whose owner had recovered from tuberculosis and was concerned about the health consequences of tobacco use. The National Family Health Survey conducted in 2019-2020 reported that prevalence of tobacco use had decreased in Nagaland, especially among women. However, the sale of tobacco to minors remains a concern.
India’s Chip Plan Stalls as Tower-Intel Deal Sets Back Modi
India’s plans to become a global player in the semiconductor industry have hit a roadblock after two major chip-making projects stalled. The first project involves a $3 billion semiconductor facility, which was being developed by a consortium that included Israel-based Tower Semiconductor as a tech partner. However, the ongoing takeover of Tower by Intel has put the project on hold. The second project, a $19.5 billion joint venture between India’s Vedanta and Taiwan’s Foxconn, is also progressing slowly as discussions with European chipmaker STMicroelectronics have hit a deadlock. This is a major setback for India’s ambitions to become a major player in the semiconductor industry.

Hijab-clad Hindu girl students’ posters trigger investigation
Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra has asked for a probe into posters which have surfaced in the state’s Damoh district featuring hijab-clad Hindu girl students in Ganga Jamuna Higher Secondary School. The posters displayed photographs and marks obtained by the meritorious students. The appearance of the hijab-like scarf around the heads of the girl students caused some controversy, although none of their family members came forward with any complaints. Mishra is taking the issue seriously and has directed officials to investigate it. Some Hindu groups have demanded that the school be de-recognised, and the district education officer take action against it.
