Rajasthan’s LoP Lashes Out at CM Gehlot for Announcing Zero Electricity Bills After Years of Public Looting

The Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly, Rajendra Rathore, recently criticized Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot over his announcement to waive fuel surcharge and other charges in electricity bills. Rathore accused the Congress party of looting the public for four and a half years and claimed that the public would not be fooled by such sudden announcements with elections on the horizon. According to Rathore, the government should first pay the outstanding amount of 15 thousand and 180 crores to electricity companies against the subsidy given to consumers, before implementing the relief measures. In addition, he questioned the government’s intention of waiving fuel surcharges up to 200 units while highlighting the loss of about one lakh and twenty thousand crores of discoms. He suggested that addressing corruption in expensive power purchases, coal purchases, and turnkey projects in connection with farmers would be a better alternative. Rathore also mentioned the plight of electricity consumers who bear the brunt of undeclared power cuts for several hours in urban and rural areas of the state. He concluded by recommending the government fulfill its previous promises of supplying electricity to farmers in two blocks a day and forming a new agricultural power distribution company.
