The job market in Bengal appears to be in a dire state, with over 35,000 applicants submitting applications for just 445 contractual positions. The roles offered by the government department require employees to catch snakes and cut grass with scissors, and pay a monthly salary of Rs 10,000. The eligibility for the positions is Class VIII pass, but graduates and postgraduates submitted applications in their thousands, as the job market is so competitive. Many of the applicants had previously taken the school service examination, and were hoping to work as teachers, but had yet to receive offers of employment. With government examinations having ground to a halt, the only option for many was temporary work, which is limited to one year, with no benefits.
