Laotian President Strengthens Cooperative Relations with Cuba at G77+China Summit
Laotian President Thongloun Sisoulith visited Cuba to attend the G77+China Summit, further boosting cooperative relations between the two countries. During his visit, President Sisoulith held official talks with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, where they discussed the importance of their bilateral relationship and their shared commitment to the G77+China cause.
President Diaz-Canel expressed his gratitude for President Sisoulith’s visit to Cuba, emphasizing its significance in showcasing Laos’ support for Cuba’s presidency of the G77+China. He recognized the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two nations since establishing diplomatic ties in 1974.
President Sisoulith also met with Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, aiming to strengthen cooperation across various sectors of common interest such as agriculture, health, sports, politics, and trade. The leaders praised the existing ties between Laos and Cuba, which have seen numerous high-level delegations exchanging visits to enhance cooperation in education, health, and agriculture.
During the official talks, both parties reiterated their mutual interest in expanding cooperation in areas including agriculture, health, sports, economy, and commerce. They highlighted the importance of President Marrero’s upcoming visit to Laos in October 2022 to further solidify bilateral relations.
President Marrero extended an invitation to Laos to participate in the 39th edition of the Havana International Fair, scheduled for November. This fair presents an opportunity for both countries to explore potential avenues of collaboration and strengthen economic ties.
President Sisoulith’s visit to Cuba coincided with the G77+China Summit, held in Havana from September 15th to 16th. The summit aimed to coordinate collective and practical actions among the 134 developing countries, including Laos, that are members of the Group of 77. It sought to promote cooperation in scientific development, technology, innovation, and address contemporary challenges.
The G77, established in 1964, serves as a platform for developing countries to collaborate, negotiate, and advocate for their interests within the United Nations. The summit welcomed participants from over 100 countries and facilitated discussions on economic, scientific, and technological cooperation.
Laos and Cuba’s efforts to strengthen their cooperative relations demonstrate a commitment to mutual growth and development. By fostering ties in various sectors, the two nations aim to enhance their partnership and contribute to the collective advancement of developing countries.
