Lagos State Introduces Master Craftsman Training Program to Address Skill Gap in Housing Sector

In a strategic move to bridge the skill gap in the housing sector, Lagos State has launched a comprehensive training project aimed at artisans and craftsmen in the industry. The program, known as the Master Craftsman Training Program, commenced on August 19th, 2023. Its purpose is to equip residents, particularly youth in the construction sector, with updated skills and additional competencies to enhance their employability and improve their economic well-being.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, Mr. Kamar Olowoshago, explained that the six-week intensive training is a weekend program focused on critical construction trades. These trades include electrical installation and maintenance works, painting and decorating, plumbing and pipe-fitting, carpentry and furniture making, as well as masonry (block laying and concreting). The program will also cover related areas such as customer relations, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), and Health and Safety. Industry experts will conduct the training, ensuring participants receive instruction based on current trends in the field.

The program will take place in two locations: Ikotun in Alimosho Local Government and Ikorodu in Ikorodu Local Government. Eligible participants must be residents of Lagos State and above 18 years of age. Additionally, they must provide evidence of registration with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency and have received basic training in the skills, either through technical colleges or informal apprenticeship programs.

Selection for the program will be based on timeliness, and application forms can be obtained from the Director of Administration and Human Resources Office at the Ministry of Housing in Lagos State.

Each certified master craftsman who achieves over 70% attendance will receive a certification from a reputable professional institute. Furthermore, they will benefit from empowerment through the provision of modern tools for their trade, work gears, and stipends funded by the State government.

Participants are advised to prepare for comprehensive practical and theoretical sessions during the training. It is important to note that trainees will be fully insured throughout the program to mitigate any potential hazards or dangers during the practical sessions.

This initiative, spearheaded by Governor Olusola Sanwo-Olu, forms part of ongoing efforts to increase the availability of safe and decent homes for Lagosians. Over the past four years, the Sanwo-Olu administration has made significant strides in the housing sector, inaugurating over 22 new homes across the state. To leverage these achievements, the administration completed and commissioned housing projects that were inherited from previous administrations. The completion of these projects curtailed unnecessary wastage resulting from their abandonment.

Fifteen budgetary allocation housing schemes, comprising over 5,000 home units at various locations in the state, were included in this comprehensive strategy. Notable scheme sites include Igando, Igbogbo, Ibeshe, Odo Onosa/Ayandelu, Agbowa, Sangotedo, Egan-Igando, LASU main Campus, Iba, Ajara, and Epe. It is noteworthy that over 95% of these schemes are now completed, creating livable cities with thriving communities.

The involvement of the private sector through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) schemes has been crucial in augmenting the state’s housing stock. By engaging over 30 private investors in joint partnerships for developing housing schemes, direct governmental expenditure has been reduced, enabling the allocation of additional funds to bridge other infrastructural gaps. Projects in collaboration with the private sector are situated at Idale in Badagry, Lekki, Iponri, Ibeshe, Owutu, Ijora, Ipaja, and Ajegunle.

The Master Craftsman Training Program is another significant step taken by Lagos State to enhance skills and empower individuals in the housing sector. Through comprehensive training, participants are set to acquire the necessary expertise to meet the demands of the industry and contribute to the growth and development of Lagos State’s housing sector.
