KT Corp., one of South Korea’s major mobile carriers, has announced its partnership with Jasmine Group, a communication technology company from Thailand, to create a Thai language-based large language model (LLM) service tailored for the Southeast Asian market. The two companies recently held a meeting at KT’s headquarters in Seoul, where they agreed to collaborate on developing the Thai LLM model and strategize for the regional market and AI-related regulations. This decision comes after KT and Jasmine Technology Solution, a subsidiary of Jasmine Group specializing in ICT systems, signed a memorandum of understanding for the project last month.

To create the Thai LLM model, KT will share its technology used in developing Mi:dm, the company’s hyperscale AI service set to be launched later this month. On the other hand, Jasmine Group will conduct a thorough analysis of the regional market and establish a graphics processing unit (GPU) farm to power the LLM. The GPU farm construction is scheduled for the first half of next year, with the creation of the Thai LLM set to commence in the latter half of the year.

The generative AI market in Southeast Asia is projected to reach $1.41 billion by 2023, with an expected exponential growth to $7.65 billion by 2030, according to global research firm Statista. This collaboration between KT and Jasmine Group aims to strengthen Thailand’s competitiveness in the AI industry while capitalizing on the burgeoning AI market in Southeast Asia.

We expect to contribute to strengthening Thailand’s competitiveness in the AI industry through cooperation with Jasmine Group, and furthermore, succeed in breaking ground in the Southeast Asian AI market, stated Kim Young-shub, CEO of KT.

This partnership not only highlights the significance of language-based LLM services but also emphasizes the international cooperation necessary to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the growing AI market. By leveraging KT’s technological expertise and Jasmine Group’s understanding of the regional market, this collaboration is poised to make a substantial impact in the Southeast Asian AI industry.

As the demand for AI-driven services continues to rise, particularly in the Southeast Asian region, it is crucial for companies to adapt and cater to the linguistic needs of different markets. The Thai language-based LLM model is a step in that direction, as it will enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of AI-powered solutions for Thai-speaking users.

With the construction of the GPU farm and the subsequent development of the Thai LLM expected in the near future, the partnership between KT Corp. and Jasmine Group holds promise for not only Thailand’s AI industry but also the broader Southeast Asian market. By joining forces, these two companies are set to embark on an exciting journey to unlock the immense potential of AI and contribute to the region’s economic growth and technological advancement.
