Damo Suzuki Dies: Singer For Krautrock Group ‘Can’ Was 74

Damo Suzuki, the iconic frontman of krautrock group Can, has passed away at the age of 74. The news of his death was confirmed through Can’s official Instagram channel on Saturday. The cause of his death was not disclosed.

In a heartfelt statement, Can’s Instagram account announced, It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of our wonderful friend Damo Suzuki, yesterday, Friday 9th February 2024. His boundless creative energy has touched so many over the whole world, not just with Can, but also with his all continent spanning Network Tour. Damo’s kind soul and cheeky smile will be forever missed. He will be joining Michael, Jaki, and Holger for a fantastic jam!

The founding members of Can, including Jaki Liebezeit, Holger Czukay, and guitarist Michael Karoli, have all preceded Suzuki in death.

Born as Kenji Suzuki in Tokyo, he left Japan as a teenager and eventually found himself in Munich’s Schwabing quarter, where he was discovered by two members of Can while performing as a street musician in 1970. That same night, he was invited to join the band without any specific instructions.

I was meant to just walk on stage and do anything, Suzuki revealed in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung in 2018.

Known for his improvisational singing style that blended English, Japanese, and his own invented languages, Suzuki became an integral part of Can’s sonic identity.

During Suzuki’s time with Can from 1970 to 1973, the band released three seminal albums: Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Future Days. Their groundbreaking sound heavily influenced music luminaries such as David Bowie, Radiohead, and Talking Heads.

Following his departure from Can in 1973, Suzuki went on to form his own band, the Damo Suzuki Band, as well as launching his own music label named Damo’s Network.

No information regarding Suzuki’s survivors has been made available at this time.

Damo Suzuki’s groundbreaking contributions to the world of music, alongside Can, will forever be remembered and celebrated. His distinct style and immense talent have left an indelible mark on the music industry, inspiring countless artists. As fans mourn his loss, Suzuki’s legacy will continue to resonate with generations to come.
